Summer Competition

So what you're saying is that the basketball coaches outsmarted the football coaches? j/k

I can definitely agree that basketball is the big winner.

Funny, that may be the case, or the football coaches that were part of it, just don't want to have anything in June and thought this was a good way for the competition to not have the opportunity to do anything either. Kind of, it doesn't make them look bad for taking a month off, because it's the rules.

How so? Just because you don't play other schools?

Ironically, that's the current baseball season. You don't play any other schools.

It's apples and oranges because, basketball plays the high school season, and then AAU the rest of the year. Baseball has the high school season, then summer leagues, then fall leagues, and football has the high school season and 10 practices. Not quite equal.

Baseball players and basketball players both can compete in June, football players can not. I know it's not all school affiliated, but the players of other sports still have the opportunity, but not football. It just doesn't make sense, especially when football is the next sport to be played. Think about it, if someone said basketball couldn't practice in October, or baseball couldn't practice in February. That would be stupid.

Is it safe to assume that linemen get left out of 7-on-7 competitions? How do they get seen by college coaches?

One day camps at college campuses in JUNE.

Basketball aslo has "open gym" the entire spring, while their coaches can be present. I do agree with Crash however, that no sport in the state needs to be extended.

Then again, you are also talking to a guy that believes we should all wake up and realize that these kids we a)re coaching need to be just that, kids. I'm all for sending them home from the end of school until summer practice (mid July) begins. I don't get into the whole Rah Rah mentality in believing that what you do/or what you don't do in June has any correlation with the outcomes in late November/early December.

Really? That's an interesting take.

For the record I think taking away June from football was selfish on the part of KY basketball. It's just one of the reasons KY football will always struggle to continue to improve its overall product. Just my take.

Unfortunately, what most dont know or know, yet won't except it, is while they are having open gym shoot arounds and 78 AAU games over 2 months, the place they could really be improving their game is in the weight room.

I can agree with that. Now the not getting better in June and July, I have to respectfully disagree with. But, to be honest, I think AAU has been bad for basketball, I know some will disagree with that, but that is what I see. What I'm really afraid of is, the basketball coaches will push the football coaches in a corner, and we will have AAU football. And, for the same reasons, I think such an organization will be bad for high school football. But, if they keep this stuff up, that is what will happen.

It's not even close in comparision to the "alternate" leagues that baketball, baseball, soccer, and track can all choose (I use choose loosely when they are told they had better be there or else...). The laughable part is that AAU can use school facilities (I have also seen high school coaches coaching at these practices...just using someone else as a figure head for the team). Say what you would like, but football is the only MAJOR sport without an alternate choice. Having June 7 on 7 allowed some schools to get some excitement generated and get a few skill kids out...not any longer.

The real issue is that 90% of schools did a good job of sharing kids, the handful of schools that had issues with basketball and football made this out to be a win-win for everyone. Most football coaches don't have a vote at the assembly, generally its the AD's who are the school rep. So to say the football coaches chose this is very very misleading.

Really? That's an interesting take.

Interesting, yes, but I call it an 'honest' take more than anything. For the record, I think June should be off limits to all sports. I just have a hard time believing that June is a huge difference maker as the season progresses. Does January-end of May? Dang right. Does preperation and how a team practices once the season gets here? Dang right. 4 weeks in June? Ehh, going to say no on that one I can promise you that I believe in the hard work and it's rewards as much as anybody on here, but working all the time doesn't mean you are working hard. When it gets down to it, the Jimmy's and Joe's make a bigger difference than some with blinders on fail to realize.

Agreed. For some reason, basketball thinks they pay the bills for athletic budgets across the state, and I'm sure they do at a lot of places, but I know for a fact that football rakes in the cash v.s their winter season counter-parts at many high schools across the state.

Come July, get at it. June, though, take 4 weeks off, I just don't believe it makes or breaks your season, nor close. I can name several 70's, 80's and 90's state championship teams that would dogwhip many of our champions the last 15 years, and I know for a fact that many of those past teams did nothing from the time school was out until mid-late July when practice began (well, the weight room was open over the summer, but as far as any organized practice or competition? Negative.)

Great points, though Ram. I guess my stance is based off of this:

1) Get back to allowing 7 on 7 in June, along with basketball doing their thing (or not :) ) OR extend dead period for 2 more weeks (ie: June 8-July 11) for all sports.

Take 4 weeks off? This is why Trinity is so good. I heard they practice for 4 hours during June. WOW!!! This is why they are good. While some schools and coaches take 4 weeks off, they are working. All I hear is how they cheat. Wow! if cheating is working hard then I say they are "guilty" of it.

I bet Boyle Co. doesn't take 4 weeks off either. Do you think Mayfield is not practicing in June?

Yes, a school may not have all their players for basketball, but you will get some good work in.

Really? June is why they are good? I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on this one.

While everyone else's kids have 4 weeks off at the pool, drinking moutain dews, and just chillin', these schools are getting better.

On the flip side of your coins, I can also name many, many teams across the state that, I don't care if they did a month long camp for the whole month of June; practicing 8 hours in only helmets or less and it wouldn't make a dang bit of difference in their season, especially come playoff time. There's a crap ton more factors that explain why Mayfield, Trinity and Boyle County are successful other than the work they put in for 3 weeks in June.

I understand, but what if you are a school that competes with these schools and you can go out 4 hours a day andhave the resources, but choose not to because your coach just says "Ah screw it."
