That it was. I thought it was over. I had someone else film and I walked into the hallway because I couldn't bear it. I'd step in every once in a while to see what was happening, but couldn't watch it all until WC took the lead. Both the postseason games were like that. You just knew Bowling Green was going to win, and then suddenly everything was different and they'd won. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine they'd lose once they were up 60-51. But in all honesty, Bowling Green has had a lot of trouble closing games out. I think back to last year, and Bowling Green led by double digits in every single game. The two games they won, they were up by that much very late, but nearly blew it before pulling it out. They had a heck of time closing out the games against Franklin-Simpson and Glasgow in this tournament. Just not their forte.

Facebook comments lead me to believe that BG was shooting instead of running clock and that is the reason they can't close out games because everyone on Facebook kept saying 'here we go again' and 'why do we always keep shooting'. Would you agree?

Congrats to WC on winning the 4th region title. Gotta feel for Chane Behanan. He'll never get to experience Rupp Arena and the state tourney.

I'm rewatching it right now, because as with before, it was all a blur. I'm at the point WC was down 9, and we'll see how much they'll shoot. When I was there, I had walked into the hallway because I couldn't watch it. I have already watched the comeback from 64-57. This is how I view it - it all happened so fast they didn't realize they were in trouble until they were. They weren't shooting, they were turning it over at that point. WC had the ball down 7, 1:45 left. They work for about 15-20 seconds, get a bucket, call timeout. Bowling Green inbounds, and get backtapped near midcourt. Central comes down, kicks it to Shanklin for 3, Dragons down two. Maybe should have called a timeout there if you're BG. They tried to lob the ball to someone past midcourt and Shanklin picks it off. Works it down to Fant, he scores, tie game. It really took about 30 seconds for that to flip and I could barely register it as a fan. I can't imagine how whirlwind that was for the players.

 

The real "here we go again" moment was Mike Geegan for Bowling Green. I feel for the kid, I really do. He missed two free throws in the 4th OT at BG with 7 seconds left and the game tied. Central rebounded, brings it up, gets fouled, hit their free throws, ballgame. Tonight after that game got tied he got fouled by Fant (which a lot of people thought was dumb - it was his 4th foul but it worked out). Geegan missed the front end of a 1 and 1 and Central took the lead on the ensuing possession. He just could not make a free throw when they needed it.

BTW PP92, for all the people on those Facebook pages who were saying "Why are they shooting", I'm a proponent of running your offense. I'm not saying rush into a shot. Be deliberate, but run your offense. Stall ball is like the prevent defense in football. It "prevents" you from winning. When teams go into the stall and then get into a fight again, their rhythm is totally shot.

Here's a breakdown of the Purple possessions after going up 60-51 with 5:11 left in the game:

 

Turnover (Clement throws it away in frontcourt)

Behanan missed 12 footer from wing (After about 15-20 seconds run off down to around 3:55)

Hollis made layup with foul (Missed FT - 3:24 left, 62-55 score)

Clement missed layup (Down to 2:47 left, probably went too fast. Clement had a lane and got to the rim, just didn't finish)

Turnover (Chane loses ball off inbound in backcourt - 2:36 left)

Hollis blocked layup (Fant made a great play to block it, but again, probably too fast - 2:20 left)

Clement made layup (Off a fastbreak - can't fault that)

Turnover (Clement loses it on a backtap in backcourt - 1:20 left)

Turnover (May throws it away on the inbound - 1:07 left)

Geegan missed FT on front end of 1 and 1 (following quick Fant foul with 47 seconds left of a tie game)

Turnover (Behanan throws it away to Halsel when he drives into a double team on the baseline)

 

That 9 point lead was the biggest they had in the game. They went 2/5 from the field down the stretch, and the only thing wrong with two of those shots was that they didn't run any time in getting them. Each player had wide open lanes to drive to the hoop. One didn't finish, one got blocked on a great play. I think it goes without saying that 6 turnovers and a missed 1 and 1 when the game was tied lost that game FAR more than any shots did.

Congrats to Coach Riley and the Dragons. I always enjoy seeing them play at the state tournament.
