It's not the newspaper's obligation to cover every team and give them prime space. It's a business. They need eyeballs. Harsh but true.

 

Clyde...do you think it would have an impact on the newspapers payroll if all of the people in these areas stopped buying the paper? IMO, it would have a huge impact and I'm like FarBeyond and El Corazon, a little coverage every now and then is all we're asking for.

Your right, I forgot Williamstown lead NKY in cow dung tossing the past couple of years and Grant Co. and Gallatin Co. are always tops in the area in the hay bale throw.

 

Not that their athletes and teams don't deserve some publicity, but seriously, what have their sports programs done that warrants coverage that is of any interest to the readers of the paper. When you win or have a stud player you get the publicity, otherwise enjoy reading about everyone else.

If by "payroll" you really mean "revenue" I'd say minimal.

 

I would guess that NKY is a relatively small percentage of their total readership and that of that small amount the 3 northern counties represent 90% of that. So if the folks in Warsaw decide to stage a protest and burn their subscriptions at the county courthouse the editors would not notice.

I find this to be true, but there are more teams in NKY than just the ninth region and a few select teams from the 10th. The Walton Verona Bearcats got minimal coverage as did other NKY teams Simon Kenton, Grant, Williamstown, and Gallatin County because they are in the 8th region. I was not a fan of Mr. Ernst and for one am not sorry he is leaving.

 

I have been hesitant to post on this subject, but El Corazon's post really hit the nail on the head. Along with something I saw at the All "A" this year.

 

I want to first say to Ryan, the best of luck in whatever he has decided to move onto. There are other writers in NKY, but none as on top of what is going on in the 9th Region as him. When we started broadcasting games for Gallatin County in the 2005-06 year, he and I kinda got into it when I asked about covering the teams that ElCorazon mentioned. He told me at that time that it's the numbers of papers sold...etc. But when the paper sent someone to Montgomery County to write about Scott's boys instead of Gallatin County's Regional Finals (the first since 1959), I really lost the rest of the respect for the paper that I had.

 

What I saw at the All "A" was Richard Skinner who was there for the Enquirer for the Girls and Boys First Round games, but while he wrote about all of the teams except Gallatin County, even though he has relatives that attend in Warsaw. Again, respect kinda gone again.

 

Looking at today, I had someone send me an e-mail a couple of weeks ago kinda accusing me of "Forgetting My Roots" of where we got our start, covering the 8th Region and going as far as Trimble County and Henry County. I told them as I will say right here that we never forget where we started and that we will NEVER stop giving the kids at Walton, Grant, Owen, Trimble, Carroll & Henry Counties their due. The only thing is I need to know about it first. I have since started receiving e-mail from the NCKC coaches about their players of the week and have just received the All 8th Region players. At one point, I had a student at Trimble County sending me articles that we posted, giving her full credit for. We would be proud to do that again!!

 

We'll add anything that we can find to our blog and make sure that those who make the news get their just due. My e-mail is all over our websites, send it to me and I'll make sure we get it on the blog. We'll also be picking back up our weekly show after basketball season on Wednesday Nights, where we interview the coaches and players that are making news. The Northern Kentucky High School Sports Report runs Wednesday Night's at 7:00pm on our site. Although we can't be everywhere and cover everything, we try to do as much as we can when we can.

While I agree that the KY Post did a superior job I don't lay that at the feet of the high school reporter on either side. Zero difference IMO if it was Boehmker(sp?) at the Enquirer. It's the economics of the world of print that caused the demise.

Regardless if we're talking about payroll or economics, if the folks in the "NOT SO HIGHLY THOUGHT OF AREAS OF NKY", all of the sudden ceased in buying a paper, it would just make it a couple of days closer to when the paper really doesn't exist. I have held off on commenting about Ryan Ernst but I for one am glad he is leaving. He didn't do his job on an assignment last year and relied on a specific coach to provide the details which were biased. Ernst's inability to even follow up with other coaches showed how little he cared about his job (or the NSHTOAONKY) and cost several athletes the recognition that they deserved! For the athletes that did get the deserved attention from Ernst...I'm excited to hear this!

 

I can almost guarantee that when the engines rev up on July 9....99.9% of the people will then claim WARSAW to be part of NKY.

 

And by the way LAWNBOY13, the folks down here don't mind slinging a little cow manure or throwing a few thousand bales of hay. At least we're putting food on the table and not picking up dog S@#$ while mowing someone's yard...we do know how to work! We're glad to be able to go to the bathroom anytime we please and fart without the neighbor hearing us!

I'm from Warsaw, so I understand where you're coming from as far as the neglect thing goes.

 

However, they have to draw the line somewhere, unfortunately.

 

As far as "costing athletes the recognition they deserve," I doubt seriously Ernst has any malicious intent -- he just has limitations in that he can only be 20 places at once. And with 30+ schools in the NoKy area, that means as many as 60 coaches to try and babysit (some better about providing information than others) just in basketball, let alone trying to keep up with swimming and wrestling in the wintertime. I can completely understand if he didn't have time to follow up with a coach.

 

Good, bad or indifferent, the economic realities of the news biz dictates that The Enquirer does even less coverage overall than they used to (which is not even remotely close to what The Post used to do). Like it or not, fringe-area schools such as Gallatin, Owen, Grant, etc., that are not firmly within the coverage area of a large media outlet, are going to get overlooked. It's always been like that. There's even less space available in the paper now because of the cost of newsprint, and making a trip down to Warsaw to do a story that may impact only a couple thousand people just doesn't give The Enquirer a lot of bang for its buck. W/re to your Speedway example, you betcha. That impacts a much broader audience than a Grant-Williamstown game.

 

Thing is, now, advances in electronic technology make it very easy for people anywhere to put together their own stats, stories, photos and other info in a nice, tidy place where reporters or anyone else can find it -- on the web. That info can also be easily delivered to potential voters, as well, via e-mail.

I'll personally miss Ryan or or anyone else who departs from the fading coverage that the paper gives local sports. I wonder how much the lack of coverage can be put back on the programs though? Lack of responses, no information readily available, not calling in scores. All of these issues can put a school out of the big picture if they are not actively promoting their programs. Home teams are required to call in the scores and can give a brief breakdown of the game to the staff writer if they so choose. Do these schools that have little to no coverage bother to do so?

IMO he will be missed. Sadly, newspapers are becoming a thing of the past. I read the paper every day but I'm a fraid I'm in the minority.

The schools themselves deserve some of the blame IF they want coverage & are not sending in the appropriate information (I said "if"...I know nothing about the schools mentioned in this thread.) With email & other forms of instant communication, it has become very easy for schools to keep track of & relay stats. If you're not sending in the information, then I can't consider any complaint much more than sour grapes about lack of coverage.

With that many schools in the NoKy area, I can just about guarantee that several are not bothering to send info in. Good, bad or otherwise, those are usually going to be the schools that struggle.

Does anyone remember an Enquirer reporter named Marty Keogh that had a column for Northern Kentucky called "The Sports Keyhole by Marty Keogh"? Not since Marty's column disappeared has there been a better beat writer than Ryan Ernst covering NKY sports. As the evolution of newspapers like the Enquirer continues to evolve to on line subscriptions, we have been blessed to have this young man objectively & accurately report on the best things happening in NKY sports. There's a line in the song "They paved paradise & put up a parking lot" that says you don't know what you've got til it's gone. Well, I'm sure that will be the case with Ryan. On behalf of many NKY sports fans, thank you Ryan for your accurate & unbiased reporting of NKY sports these past ten years. There are literally thousands of your articles archived forever in the scrapbooks of so many past & present NKY athletes. Best of luck to you & your family. You will be sorely missed.
