Freshman Regional Tournament/ Feb 9th

Featured Replies

Notre Dame is hosting the freshman tournament

NewCath vs Simon Kenton

Cooper vs Ryle

Some of the teams are pulling their JV players back down to play in this tournament. Proud of NewCath sticking with their original freshman.

NCC moves on with a forfeit from Simon Kenton and Cooper beats Ryle. Championship is on Saturday at 1030am at Notre Dame.

Both Ryle and Cooper played their original freshman teams. No additions to their rosters.

Cooper and Ncc should be a really good game. Both have a great group of girls.

I was talking to Cooper's JV coach after the Ryle Cooper game last Saturday and in our conversation I said that Cooper is not too far away from competing with the 9th Region's best squads. Sounds like, from their Freshman team this season, I was closer than even I thought. Good luck to both teams in the Finals.

This topic comes up over and over. There is no right or wrong. There are positives and negatives (other than winning and competitive reasons) no matter what the coach chooses.

Generally I think it is a positive thing if a player, who usually plays JV/Varsity, gets to play with their peers, even if it is just for a tourney.

I tend to disagree. If players have been dedicated to the freshman team all season then they should have the opportunity to finish it out and compete in their end-of-season tourney...they've earned it. There's no real need for a player to play down and take someone's playing time unless of course the team is short-handed. This is typically a freshmen's final games of the year while the JV/V player will continue to play. As suggested, if it's truly "just" to play with their peers...then have the parents pony-up a couple of bucks and play in a rec tourney over the weekend.

Glad that both teams stuck with the same Freshman they have playing with all year. There would be no need to add that factor in to what appears to be shaping up to be the future big county rivalry. Cooper and Ryle freshman split this year with each winning one game - I expect this to be a battle each time they meet in the years to come.

I so agree! I am not fond of the revolving door style that some AAU teams have for their rosters; we certainly don't want to see that in school ball. Let the team be "the team"!

Also agree that Cooper is shaping up to be a team to be reckoned with.

Whats up with SK? A forfeit??

Playing in rec. tourney with your classmates is exactly the same thing as representing your class and your school in the regional tourney. (dripping with sarcasm). Freshman kids might be moved up to fill out the roster of a JV team or for other reasons, but that does not mean that the kid had rather be playing up instead of playing with their peers. Especially true with girls, but I am sure there are boys who enjoy playing with their classmates too. Freshman year is the only year of high school you have a team made up of just your class. I think it makes for a unique experience that should not be discounted.

As I said originally there is no right or wrong. Only different options. There are positives and negatives either way.

I would vehemently be opposed to bringing a player down from JV who has played JV all year. Wrong message to the frosh team. Screws up rotations and chemistry.

I ride with the boys or girls that I rode with all year. Win or lose.

I was just responding to your quote "having fun playing with peers" and no mention of representing their school, however, it still doesn't change "my" opinion. I don't see any negatives if the players stay with their respective teams and finish what they started, but oh well...no dog in the fight. We'll agree to disagree.

There is a team in this tournament that will bring their freshmen that play JV/V and let them play down in this tournament. This team has done it for the last two years. It is not right to the freshmen who have played together as a team all season, but it happens. If the freshmen have played up all year then they should finish playing up with the JV/V teams that they are playing with. Let the freshmen team have their playing time, and give the freshmen who have played up playing time with either the JV/V teams, whoever they have played for...IMO

Cooper and NCC are in the finals. I know NCC is playing their original freshman. Unfortunately their starting point left tonight in the JV game against notre dame with bad knee. Good Luck to both teams.

Cooper wins the championship over NCC. Cooper finishes the year 20wins and 2 losses. Nice season ladies!!

Emily Conner, Brooke Smith are named to the all tournament team and Katey Pittman is named MVP of the tournament.
