12th Region Tournament Favorite

Featured Replies

With the post-season just around the corner, let's turn our thoughts to the team(s) favored to represent the 12th in Rupp Arena. Papa sees a couple of favorites, but several more squads are poised to make a run at the regional crown should the favorites hit a bump in the tournament road.

1a. Pulaski County (20-3). The Maroons haven't lost in 2011; and avenged an earlier loss to Wayne County a couple of weeks ago on the road. Led by sophomore guards Kody Johnson and Taylor Gover, Pulaski can score in bunches. Only losses have been to Ballard, Moore and Wayne.

1b. Wayne County (21-2). Wayne has been tested at home a few times in January, losing to Pulaski by 1 and defeating McCreary by 2 and Southwestern by 3. Will the senior leadership of Austin Shearer and Gavin Dunagan take Coach Woods' squad to the promised land?

2. East Jessamine (15-5). The Jags seem to have figured out how to win the close ones.

Dark horses - Mercer County, Southwestern, McCreary Central, Lincoln County, West Jessamine.

Have seen all of them play and this seems pretty close too me as well. 7 or 8 teams that can win the 12th Region.

I still have Wayne County as a favorite but I won't see them until Feb. 15. I'll see Mercer next Tuesday. I was very impressed with Pulaski County. I think those are your top 3 and until someone besides Wayne or Pulaski beats Wayne or Pulaski then it is definitely with reason to rank them 1A. and 1B.

Pulaski and Wayne are favorites. Mercer and Boyle are dark horses. Southwestern could pose problems on a given night. McCreary and Monticello are playing for fourth in that distict. Somerset is not a factor, nor is Lincoln or Rock right now. Danville could be dangerous but always underachieves.

Why no more love for Mercer County? I haven't seen much 12th Region action this year, but spoke with someone from the 12th whose opinion on basketball that I really value and he said that Mercer could be one of the favorites (if not 'the' favorite) going into the year. Have they had injuries, etc? Looking at their schedule there are some understandable losses and some that are surprising. Any input?

The potential is there. Balanced scoring and rebounding, senior leadership. 5-3 region record and a recent thumping at home at the hands of East scared me off a bit, but I don't know if Mercer was short-handed that game or not.

I think Wayne and Pulaski are too close to call with Mercer not too far behind. Then East, Lincoln, Southwestern, Danville, McCreary and West all pretty much interchangable just depends on who shows up on a given night. Actually I'd put East a notch above the rest of that group. After that Boyle is probably the only team that could pull an upset but most likely could not win three in a row to win the region.

I agree completely with region12hoops.

Mercer hasn't shown the consistency that Wayne and Pulaski has shown. Like I said until someone besides Wayne or Pulaski beats Wayne or Pulaski I don't see how they can't be the favorites.

Next is East and Mercer.

After that it is Lincoln, West, McCreary, Sourhwestern, Danville and Boyle IMO.

How are they playing for fourth after the Raiders beat them 20 plus on multiple nights?

Clearly they are the two bottom dwellers is what I was saying. Word is there might be a push for a change down in Stearns.

I dont think Raider Rob is as secure as you might think. The good people of Stearns are like the Egyptians, a revolt is gonna happen, lol.

I'll believe it when I see it and not until. Rumors have been flying around for years and nothing yet. Don,t think it will happen.

Has McCreary ever fired a coach in any sport due to lack of success?

I think they fired Coach Bozeman, Coach Hatcher and Coach Auther in football. In Basketball Coach Eckler but that was political he was like 33-5. Have not been many over the past 50 years can,t say before that.
