HC went inside quite a bit the 1st quarter and Holmes rejected 3 or 4. The Indians were a little passive taking it to the hole after that. They made a bunch of 3's to stay in the game.

He had an off night shooting the ball. I think he only attempted 4-5 threes and made 1 and a couple of them went in and out.

This was a good game. Holmes stretched out a little lead in the 1st quarter and it remained 4-10 points the remainder of the game. HC shot the ball real well for the game and Holmes played in spurts. Hayes hit 3 big 3's in the second half when HC would cut it close. Rice was the big factor in the game. He played above the rim often. The Bulldogs took the Indians out of the game in the first quarter with several blocked shots inside. HC didn't take it inside much after that. Good effort by both teams.

 

Sorry everyone that it took me so long to respond. As you can tell by my tone in some of my posts here, I am very upset about this game. It's not that we lost, but our effort again IMO was very timid and scared. Except for a couple of stellar individual efforts, Holmes could have blown us out. Now, to the game, BM, we did not shoot the ball well overall, maybe from 3, but definitely not overall as you will see in the upcoming complete box score and notes from the game.

As for the game, Holy Cross fans should be thankful that McClendon was declared eligible this year when he transferred. Without him, it would've been ugly for the Indians. I don't have his exact numbers but I'd say he had 15-20 on the night and also had no less than 5 rbs. Maybe statman can help out with the stats.

For Holmes, the turning point was when Chris Hayes had 11 points in the 3rd quarter, including three straight 3's to put Holmes on top by 10 or 11 after Holy Cross cut the lead to 3. After this, HC would get no closer than 5 the rest of the game.

Kudos to Holmes for staying mentally tough. They had some lapses that allowed HC to go on some mini runs but for every run HC made, Holmes would responded with 3 and 4 unanswered buckets themselves. There were two or three spurts where Holmes scored 8 unanswered.

 

Holmes has a big game Tues against Covcath that likely will decided who gets the #1 seed in the district.

There was a 3pt attempt by Broering around the 1:40 mark of the 4th Qtr that spun down into the cylinder and popped out. If that shot goes down, we cut the lead to two and the outcome of the game may have been different and at the very least the margin victory by Holmes may have been different. For the life of me, I cannot figure out how that ball did not go down.

Knox and Peterson both played extremely well defensively with a couple blocks and big rbs throughout the game.

 

Quan Palmer is also getting better as the season progresses. He had a personal 6-0 run tonight that helped extend Holmes' lead.

 

The only time Palmer scored six points in a row for the Bulldogs was in the first quarter after the score was Holmes 11-10. Palmer scored twice on two pointers, then Avery for HC hit a three and Palmer closed the scoring out in the 1st with another two pointer for a 17-13 1st Qtr score.

I guess that I was mistaken when I said that HC cut it to 2. Looks like it was 3 and it was more like 50-47 instead of the 40-38 that I first indicated. And now I'm not even certain of that. Sorry for my bogus information. I have to hand it to the Bulldogs for constantly denying the Indians any further gain every time they were knocking at the door. With the way HC kept pulling close it appeared that they were about to figure it out but Holmes kept answering when it was crucial. The 3 ball kept HC in it and they died by it as well, and at the line too. Holmes denied anything close to the basket. I keep hearing that Burger is a great player, and he truly appears to be a fierce smart competitor, but the Bulldogs totally shut him down making him a non-factor. The most effective and consistent players that I saw for the Indians were McClendon and Broering. HC isn't too shabby and I think that on a spectacular shooting night they might be able to beat the Bulldogs, but I still think that hypothetically Holmes would take 8 out of 10 games played.

 

B-Ball-fan, you had it right. The score was 40-38 with about 3:30 to go in the 3rd Qtr. Then a Hayes three and then a Fuller two to cut it back to a 3-point lead with about 2:35 to go in the 3rd, that was the closest HC would ever be the rest of the game. Like I said though, I still do not know how that Broering three attempt missed.

Last year as a Sophomore, Jake hit 37% from the floor, 25% from 3s, and 70% from FT line and averaged 12.0 ppg.

This year as a Junior, Jake is shooting 36% from the floor, 26% from 3 and 77% from FT line and is averaging 12.4 ppg.

 

Overall, you can say he has impoved slightly, but not where I am sure he or the coaching staff wanted him to be, but the season is still young.

2-14 is a really tough night but I feel for the kid, been there before. The Indians should be ready by tourney time to contest CovCath and Holmes.

I didn't realize Gray played so well. 9 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assist. Gray has improved tremendously over the past two years.

 

I figured McClendon was close to a double double. He was extremely active on the boards.

Without Broering and McClendon specifically, we get blown out. I guess I keep forgetting they are teenagers, but they all have some talent. I feel sorry for the team we play when we get hitting on all cylinders.
