Moore 75, Covington Holmes 53: The 22nd-ranked Mustangs (5-2) outscored the No. 16 Bulldogs (3-2) in every quarter and rolled in the first round of the Hoopin It Up Holiday Classic at South Laurel.

Moore led 43-32 at the half, then outscored Holmes 17-7 in the third quarter to break open the game.

Deondre McWhorter, a 6-foot-9 Morehead State signee, led Moore with 26 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Mekale McKay added 16 points and eight rebounds.

“They kept pressing us and we whipped the press,” said Moore assistant Joe Hibbard.

Pierre Mayfield led Holmes with 13 points.

In what universe is Moore ranked 22nd and the Bulldogs 16th ??? :eek: What am I missing here ??? :confused:

Wasn't there but from one who was, the big guy was way too much (no answers). Moore is the real deal. With Holmes playing Ballard on Sunday (according to Walter whom I don't doubt), it won't be any easier, but this team will get better. They have lost to Aiken and Moore, two very good teams that can match them athletically. In the long run this is good seasoning for this inexperienced bunch. I have not seen anything where Holmes is ranked 16th. That is a huge stretch if someone did. This is a tough stretch for Holmes before they play more 9th region teams. Only Boone will have a comparable stretch in King of Bluegrass. Good teams need to play top tier state teams to ready themselves for late Feb/early March. When Holmes won the state they lost to Ballard by 10 early (I think). It was a good measuring stick and eye opener for them. Don't mean to say this Holmes team is anywhere as good, though. Just the tough state games can help.

December 29, 2007 - Holy Cross, NY - In New York, New York - 78-44 - Elijah Justice's Sophomore year.

 

December 27, 2008 - American Heritage, Fl - In Kissimmee, Florida - 76-59 - Elijah Justice's Junior year.

If I'm not mistaken both of those teams were led by McDonald's All-Americans. Holy Cross had Sylven Landesberg who went to Virginia, and American Heritage had Kenny Boynton who went to Florida. The Florida tournament was the first games following a seperated shoulder where Justice played but was unable to shoot the ball. It's my understanding that when he was fouled he had to shoot the FT's left handed...

Holmes lack of size is really going to hurt them when they go against a team with a really good big man. (Ex: Moore)

 

I agree that NO team in the 9th region and not many in the state (hence Moore being #6) are going to be more athletic than Moore and Aiken. Holmes is playing 2 top 7 teams in back to back days which will be a good learning experience for them. This group has several seniors but are still inexperienced. Holmes had a stretch like this last year where they lost 2 of 3 in the KOB then went 16-2 over their next 18 games of the regular season. These tough early season matchups will really show them what they need to work on and where they need to improve.

 

Coming back to nky next week end in the Lloyd Memorial should be a nice change of pace, literally, for this team.

 

Things don't get much easier with Ballard today.

 

BTW, it was Bryan Station who beat them by 14 early in the season in their state championship year...not Ballard. They beat Ballard by 3 that year.

To get an extra game in. All bye teams played an extra game yesterday that was not included in the tourney.
