Holmes 72 Newport 51

Final

Newport led at the half 39-35 but it was all Holmes in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 37-12.

I actually thought Newport played well for 3 quarters but Holmes didn't let them get the wide open shots they got and made in the 2nd quarter when I believe they scored 26 pts. When Newport's starting center went to the bench Newport didn't have an answer for Rice inside. He scored at will and Holmes really got after Newport on defense for the last 8 minutes. Holmes held them to 2 pts in the 4th quarter.

Anyone have any stats on this one? Was unable to attend and can't find anything online anywhere.

Sounds like Holmes came out in the fourth quarter and simply just dominated Newport. Holmes is looking good and will only get better.

To whose coaching staff and when? I also didn't see any technical fouls called by the officials unless I missed something. Please explain this post.

There was nothing that I saw. The Holmes coach benched some players and they were frustrated, but it didn't seem anything out of the norm for any game. Coaches do this all the time and players get frustrated. I never saw any disrespect to the officials from either team. It was a high intensity game with both teams playing hard. You'd expect that from this rivalry.

Outside of a second quarter meltdown, Holmes pretty much dominated this game from the looks of it.

The 2nd quarter was ugly, but give Newport credit. Garland got hot and Holmes took some bad shots and missed some easy one's. They used a half court press in the second qtr., but went to full court press after half. It was easy after that. Newport simply wore down. Looked like Booher was just trying different things to see what the kids could handle. They look good most of the time and sometimes dominating. I'm concerned how they will handle big teams. Newport was smaller than them. They are going to have runs in games, it's whether you can overcome them or not to beat them.

Holmes dominated the 4th quarter. It was 54-49 at the end of the 3rd quarter. This was a very good game (closer than the score indicates). Newport deserves much credit since they lost everyone from last year. I went to this game thinking it would be over in the 1st quarter. To have a close game at the end of the 3rd was surprising. Newport ran out of gas and options in the 4th quarter.
