Bell County Football: Who Can Replace Dudley Hilton?

Featured Replies

I just can't see Matney leaving Johnson Central. He is building quite an impressive program and the school is bigger then Bell with resources, facilities and support that rival most any school.

Hager from Sheldon Clark would be a nice choice. He's a great coach and really a good person.

Brown from Rowan has done a good job and proven he has some ability but I know nothing about him personally?

This will be interesting. Besides Mills, what names might be on the radar?

Just brainstorming, but would anyone on this list be a possibility? All of them have been successful and may show interest for various reasons. Do any of them have ties to Bell County? I have no idea who is on the Bell County wish list, but I left off guys like Mueller, French, etc. and tried to list a few names who I thought might be reasonable possibilities.

Jay Cobb

Paul Rains

Mark Dixon - Hazard

Robbie Lucas - Somerset

ShaDon Brown - Rowan Co

Shawn Hager - Sheldon Clark

Mark Peach - Anderson Co

John Hines - Pulaski Co

Jim McKee - Scott Co

Jim Matney - Johnson Central

To the Bell County decision makers. Be very very careful whom you choose. When The Great Chuck Smith left the Rebel Nation the Boyle program slipped a little. Chris Pardue (Smiths replacement) is a fine fellow but for some reason could not get it done. Realizing there were several contributing factors. Those factors will also be in play as Hilton had tremendous sucess on Log Mountain.

Good luck to Bell as you search for a new coach and good luck to Dudley.

Bell is not that far from Barbourville and Bell seems to have the talent year in and year out we cannot seem to produce on a consistent level in Knox County. I do not think Mills is 100% out of the mix and it could come down to $$$$ yet.

This would be his chance to get away from Highlands.

That is one reason I listed him NamecipS. I don't know if Matney would even give it a thought, but on the outside, it looks like it might be a good fit.

Surely there are some 6A coaches (like McKee) who are good coaches but may be looking for a different opportunity where they can win and not have to battle T and X on an annual basis. I think this job will be attractive to several different types of coaches.

Bell's upcoming drop to 3A makes it even more enticing, IMO.

After some thinking I think Coach Hilton knew when he might be leaving. He is too smart not to have already had his replacement on his current staff so he could groom the person. Instead of Mills or someone outside of the program I would not be surprised if the person selected is already on the coaching staff. I do not think a person has to have a tremendous pedigree they have to know the Bell County way, what better person than someone who has been and is currently on staff being mentored by Hilton every step of the way. I say it is someone in house IMO.

Saw were it was posted on KHSAA taking applications until Jan 15th or 16th.

I think that Paul Rains would be a great replacement, but I would not want to be the coach who followed Coach Hilton. He is a class act who has had great success everywhere he has been. He will be a tough act to follow.

Many of the names listed on the list above are already at successful or building successful programs and may not want to leave those situations. Paul Rains is from Williamsburg and wants to be closer to his family, and does not have a coach job right now but does have a great resume.

Dudley Hilton is also the Athletic Director so would he be in charge of hiring his replacement? And would the new football Coach also be offered the AD job? I'm assuming no unless they use it to lure a certain someone away like Mills.

I don't think that will come with it. I think that the AD will not be a coach. JMO

What about Coach Donahue from Harlan High School? He has done a great job at Harlan over the past several years.

This is one of those situations where you have a school putting together a comittee to look for a replacement for Head Coach getting attention from all across the state and even out of state. When you have just what the doctor ordered right in your own back yard. They just need to ask themselves a couple of questions it would be a very open and closed situation!

1. We want a proven winner!

2. We want someone that is very knowledgable of the game.

3. Someone that is loved by the kids he coaches.

4. Lastly, someone that is willing to work and do what it takes to get the job done!

This would elude to a quick hire in a home grown canidate that would be best for this job right now..............FRED HOSKINS
