Too many Teams in the Playoffs?

Featured Replies

I know it creates an opportunity for more teams to play an extended season but more than often the first round consist of nothing but blowouts. Maybe the playoffs should include the top two from each district instead of the top four. In some districts there are only four teams anyway and they all go no matter what their records are.

Any thoughts?

4 is good....makes last 1 or 2 regular season games mean something and keeps interest up...there are some blow outs but a few 4's win.....there are also some blowouts in regular season non district games..what would we do about those...say they cant play anymore.

Every team should be in the playoffs. Just like they are in basketball. What difference does it make if there are some first round blowouts? There have been some blowouts in state and regional finals games.

Let me give you some more history and help, even though it isn't all about money for the schools. In the days when only one team came to the playoffs, many times that deciding game was not played at the end, but rather, whenever the traditional schedule date allowed. For example, Belfry and Russell used to play about the fifth game every year, and basically, the loser was done. They go very little crowd after that point (whoever lost), and it set a negative tone for a lot of other things.

It got better when it increased to two, and then still to four. As others will point out, lots of teams without previous success were able to remain in the playoff picture, better gates, more support, more kids out, improved play next time, etc.

It's easy to sit back and say that anything more is too many, but there is another thing that is a problem. With anything less than four (for that matter, with anything less and all getting in), it basically allows the rich to keep getting richer. Remember the article early in the year about 40 something titles among a handful of teams? Part of the reason is that those schools get three to five weeks additional practice every year. With everyone in the playoffs (or nearly everyone), that means an extra week of practice for nearly every team, or four weeks over the career of a player (minimum). That's how you build parity, and keep more people involved.

I dont mind all getting in but it needs to be seeded so the regular season games mean something....How does anyone feel about 3 teams in with 1 seed getting 1st round bye

I am not for all teams getting in the playoffs. However, I am also not for cutting the number down from where it is now. Just over 1/2 of the teams get in and I am okay with that.

As far as blowouts, there are many nondistrict and district blowouts during each season, but they still play the games because you never know what can happen. All it takes it one team to have an off night and one to have their best game to see an upset that those kids who pulled it will always remember!

I don't know about 1-3A, but I do remember Scribe's numbers for 4A:

4 Seed wins 17% of opening round games (nearly 1 in 5)

3 seed wins 35% of opening round games (over 1 in 3)

Change the others if you need to, but it sounds like 4A is doing just fine, those lower seeds are proving that some belong in the state tournament as they knock off district champs and runners-up.

Good post. I did not realize that 25% of the 3 & 4 seeds won their first round playoff games.

I have a problem with a team that has a losing record, and yet still be in the playoffs. Back in the late 70's only one team made the playoffs out of the district. 1979 We had a 9-1 record and stayed home. To me the playoffs should be earned, not automatic like in some districts.

The open playoff system doesn't seem to hurt Indiana teams. I don't know about the lower classes, but I would pick Warren Central to win a game over any Kentucky or Ohio team. Likewise, I would pick either Roncalli or Cathedral (a 24-21 loser to Cincy St. X) over any similar sized school in either Ohio or Kentucky. I don't see any downside to an open playoff system. The best team in the state wins in the end and all teams have an entire season to prepare for the playoffs. Nobody gives up on their team midway through the season. Drawing for the first round match-ups also results in some great first and second round games.

What if two or three of the best teams in the state are in the same district?

That has happened before when this system was in place. When it used to be that only 1 team from each district made it, often times a good team was left out. I can think of at least one instance where a team ranked in the top 5 in the state for most of the season, went 8-2, but 1-1 in their 3 team district and therefore did not make the playoffs. They had even knocked off the previous #1 team in the state in their respective class, but stayed home in the postseason. I would hate to go back to this system.

I don't like having any 4 team districts where everyone gets in regardless, but it looks like the new 6 class system, if implemented, would put just about every team in the playoffs. Right now, just over half make it.

I like two out of the district, if your 3rd. stay home and improve next season.

If your 3rd. in your district (with 4 or 5 teams) Do you really deserve to be in the playoffs? I'm sure that there are cases in the past of some teams that have finished 3rd. or worse doing good, but make the regular season count more.

Heck, I'm of the opinion that the more games the better. If it were feasable, I'd be for all teams going to the playoffs, PLUS a losers bracket. I have to feel for teams like Butler that don't make it to the playoffs because of a meat-grinder district. Then I have to feel for teams like Manual who haven't gotten past the 2nd round in forever because St. X and Male. A losers bracket (or to sound more PC, a 2nd chance bracket) could give them a shot to win a few more games. But it'd be nearly impossible to set up... if someone could do it, though, I'd be all for it.

I am with you on the more games the better. Kids all over the state work so hard to play the game, yet many only get 10 games. More is better.

I don't know how a '2nd chance' bracket would work. That could be a nightmare to set up.
