I'm sure my subconscious enters the equation a lot but doesn't when it comes to race. Sorry to spoil your fun.

My subconscious is always hard at work. Even as I type I am wondering what it is thinking. But CONSCIOUSLY I can say that I do not like lots of spoiled athletes (like Haynesworth) regardless of their color. Need a white name? How about Jeff George or Ryan Leaf? They were just as spoiled and jerk-acting as Haynesworth. The problem with society is that talking heads stir this stuff up and we keep it alive on BGP. Judge guys on their character, not their color (and low and behold Haynesworth still comes up short) :thumb:

It's naive/ignorant/foolish to think that race doesn't factor into any opinions. We all have conscious or subconscious factors that help us form an opinion or come up with a reaction. Race is one of them. Socioeconomic factors . Personal experience. Lack of education.

 

So the question isn't "does race play a part." The question is "what portion of our reaction is influenced by race?" We THINK we know fully how we came up with an opinion but, in reality, we really don't know to the 100% level.

No argument specifically about Haynesworth.

One thing I do like about 1st and 10 is that Skip does have a lot of topics on race and his opponent is more often than not African American. From what I gathere from Rob Parker - who is a frequent debater - and yesterday with Eddie George and Steven Bardo, there is a lot of animosity towards Favre in the African American community because of the double standard (especially from the predominately white media) applied to him. Eddie George took it to the field of play.

When we talk about Brett Favre's antics, what has he done thats been bad other than the recent cell phone deal (I don't know enough about that to comment on it other than the rumors about it)? If I'm not mistaken he did have an issue with pain killers several years ago, so that was an issue.

But I don't have a problem with Favre holding out until the last minute and playing. Strahan did the same thing with the Giants and Revis held out a long time this year for more money. I don't look at them in a bad light.

If you're talking about all human beings, then can't we just bring it out in the open that race plays a factor in everything and drop the subject altogether, because I'm reallly getting tired of hearing the race card brought up everytime somebody has a disagreement or a temper tantrum.

For the great majority of decisions we make as human beings we factor in many components consciously or subsconsciously when it's in regard to another human being. Race would be one of those factors. However, to answer your first question directly, just because race is a factor does not mean the decision is "racist" in the traditional sense. It could be the it causes us to consider the human experience of that person. It could be we consider the culture of that person. It could be that we consider our own dealings with people of that race - good or bad. For the majority of us and not including SVFan this can and often is a subconscious determination.

 

It's no different than switching "race" with "wealth" or "religion" or "hometown" or "sex" or..... It all factors into the human brain.

Absolutely. Anyone who thinks otherwise is lying to themselves. As a black man I have found myself making many racist comments towards blacks, whites and mexicans on more than one occasion. My excuse is that I am from the Dave Chappelle generation but truth be told it is wrong and I am definitely guilty. For all of you holier than thou folks who have never made a racist comment or thought whether it be conscious or subconscious......you should be politicians because I believe you are lying.

Well duh, everyone is racist in their own way by definition. At this point, in the year 2010, I would think that everyone would accept that by now and quit crying and moaning about it and stop blaming every decision made on race this and race that.
