Up this way, I don't think we eat them in the way they're pictured above. If you add more soup (and ham or bacon) to it, we'd call it bean soup -- for which I have a severe craving now, with all of this talk about cornbread!

 

Absolutely! May put a pot on this week, we "soak" them overnight, rinse and place in the crock pot with a hamhock or two and water (personal choice on how much depending on how thick or "soupy" you refer). No hamhocks you can use bacon or salt pork but imo hamhocks are best.Cook on the low setting all day and make a cast iron skillet of cornbread,onions, fried taters and you have a down home country meal at it's best! :thumb:

This reminds me of how my grandma used to make bean soup.

Soup beans

I never had them while growing up in Maryland. Navy beans and ham, yes, but not these.

 

However, upon meeting my wife-to-be, originally from Greenup County, I was introduced to them. And in no uncertain terms, I was made to know that they are soup beans.

And the typical additives - cornbread, diced onions and/or chow-chow relish, and maybe mustard.
