Paging (yet again!) all Highlands football historians on BGP...

Featured Replies

So, I have some more questions for the HHS football experts... any and all help is of course appreciated!

1) I know that David Cecil, for whom HHS' stadium is named, died from a football-related injury in 1952. Does anyone know when Highlands officially named the stadium in his honor? Also, did the field/stadium have a name prior to that?

2) According to my records, Highlands has retired Jim Burt's jersey #40 and Marty Moore's jersey #43. Is this correct, and have any other HHS players had their jersey numbers retired? Also, did Marty Moore play RB/LB? What position(s) did Jim Burt play?

3) I have read that former HHS coaching legend Homer Rice attended college at Centre College. It is also my understanding that he has earned a doctorate degree, as he has been referred to as "Dr." in some literature I've come across. Does anyone know where he received his doctoral degree, what kind of degree it is (PhD, EdD), and in what field? (Perhaps henry521 will know this one.)

Thanks again!

Is Highlands field still Proscan Imaging field?

No and it never was. There was some gossip along those lines as I recall when the Field Turf was installed but I'm pretty sure it was just that: gossip.

Does Highlands have anything like a football "hall of fame," as some other schools have, to honor the very best players who've gone through the program? I think there's a NKY sports hall of fame, but I've never heard of a Highlands football hall of fame.

No they don't. At this point, that would be a miserable task trying to do the selection. I sure wouldn't want to be on that selection committee. You'd be arguing for hours over what players should first be inducted. Heck, the first class you'd have to induct a ton of players. I'd heard some faint talk of doing it, but I think it fell apart for the very reason I mentioned, although I don't know that for a fact.

The hamster is running the wheel in my brain on this topic. Trying to find time and a committee to help with it.:thumb:

Yes, it's called "the roster."

Someone did put together a Top 100 or something like that, several years ago. I think it was Fort Thomas Living magazine. But, that's about it.

There were ballots in the Ft. Thomas Living magazine that were to be filled out , (like an election ) , then top vote getters were named best at that position. If I remember correctly , there were two seperate catagories , early years and then the later years. They were write in ballots .

It's been a long time since this matter has been brought up. Is the magazine still in circulation ?

I'm going strictly by memory , man , that was a long time ago !

Jim Burt also played defensive back. He also played quarterback in the 1959 state championship game after Roger Walz was rejected from the game.

Fort Thomas Living honored the greatest Highlands players of all time in 1980. There was a ballot distributed throughout town to vote on the nominees by position between 1954 and 1980. Players on the ballot were selected by Homer Rice, Owen Hauck, Mike Murphy, Roger Walz and Bill Herrmann. A group of players from 1915 through 1954 selected the all star team for those years. Roger Walz was the top vote getter. Dale Mueller made the second team. He would have been the top vote getter except I caught on at the last minute that his mother was stuffing the ballot box with ballots she was passing out to her students at Latonia Elementary School. Dale and I still laugh about it. Over 3,000 Fort Thomas residents voted for the all star team. All of the players were honored at half time of the Simon Kenton game in 1980. It would be next to impossible to create a ballot for a community vote today. There are just way too many great players since 1980 and fewer and fewer people that remember the great players prior to that year.

Do you happen to have a copy of these "all-star" teams? If so, would it be possible to get a copy from you?

I should be able to find that issue. Just give me a little time.

On a side note, 30 years after doing the all star team in 1980, I now have Homer Rice and Dale Mueller on the cover of my newsmagazine, Inside Fort Thomas, this month. It comes out tomorrow.
