September 15, 201016 yr I heard Mitch McConnell say in a sound bite that letting the cuts expire for the top earners will stop them from creating new jobs, etc. (sic) My question to Mitchy is....why haven't they been creating them throughout the time they've had the cuts? How do you know they haven't and that things would have been worse with higher taxes? Which of course they would have been. Kind of like Obamy's message that things would have been worse if he didn't do something.

Do you watch the news?
September 15, 201016 yr Author Any comment on the original question Ace? As I recall (and if I'm wrong I'l admit my mistake) you were one of the vocal opponents of the Bush Tax Cuts because they would do nothing for anyone but the rich. If that was true then how will extending ANY of them help anyone?

September 15, 201016 yr If that was true then how will extending ANY of them help anyone? Maybe I'm a cynic, but I'm guessing extending the tax cuts is a way to get the proletariat to vote for their candidate in November. The Democrats can say "we're extending tax cuts, vote for us," while the Republicans can say "those tax cuts were our idea, vote for us." And the people, not hearing anything more than TAX CUTS will fall in line with whichever one they always vote for. And of course...nothing will change.

The complaint that I have had is that they did not create jobs like those who support them say they will. If there were so great in jobs creation we would have had a huge expansion in the job force from 2003 until now. I say the proof is in the pudding. Even now, companies are bringing in record profits, but not expanding their job forces, why, because the people that buy their stuff don't have the money to do it any more. So, either the government has got to find a way to put money in the consumers pockets, or the businesses have to hire them with the hope they will start buying stuff.

The economy did grow after the tax cuts. Then we ran into the housing bubble caused by decisions Congress made with 100% loans and Freddie Mac and Mae blowing up, along with the poor spending habits of government and personal spending. Then there is just the ups and downs of the economy. With people overspending and running up debt, they had to stop their consumer spending and pay their bills. Much like the government needs to do. And how does government put money in the hands of the consumer? They do not. The government only takes (taxes) money. If the government wants people to have money reduce taxes for everyone. The companies that are hanging onto their capital at this time are doing so because of the uncertainity of the times. Especially when it comes to government regulation, taxes and overspending.

If it wasn't you I admit my mistake, it must have been some another lefty. So them you are opposed to Obama's stimulus package as it hasn't created the jobs that it promised either?
September 15, 201016 yr So them you are opposed to Obama's stimulus package as it hasn't created the jobs that it promised either? You are simply wrong. That is a republican talking point. Look at all of the company openings and new roads, etc. that even the Rs have celebrated in their states. Not only that, the deficit is down from this time last year. FWIW, I am not having an either or discussion. There were about a million jobs created during the Bush presidency, with all of the tax cuts. Why not more if this is the way to go? The economy and revenue did not grow on the same pace that it was prior to the tax cuts.

Also whether you choose to believe it or not but revenue did increase at the about the same rate after the cuts. GDP didn't increase as much as under Clinton but it wasn't that far off either.

Okay, you are correct 3 million as compared to 22 million under the old tax bracket. I believe that revenue increased, but it dropped from the plane that it was on before the cuts.
September 15, 201016 yr Okay, you are correct 3 million as compared to 22 million under the old tax bracket. I believe that revenue increased, but it dropped from the plane that it was on before the cuts. In Bush's first term he still managed to create close to 3 million net jobs. That's not too shabby considering the number of jobs lost due to the tech bubble bursting. Was it 11 million no but any president in office during the 90's would have enjoyed that success. Just the right place at the right time. And yes it dropped from the plane it was on because revenue decreased from Clintons last year to about 2003 when, you guessed it, the tax cuts kicked in.

WOW
September 15, 201016 yr So he created NO? jobs in his second term? WOW Actually the total jobs created under Bush was closer to 5 million. Wiki states 2.9 in the first term, 1.1 in the second Thinkprogress had an article that states 4.8
