I was a Freshmen that year. I wouldn't say "played", more like stood on the sidelines and was a practice dummy for Mike Donoghue.

Nice win but I think Coach Wirth is still trying to get the youngsters acclimated to Varsity football. He needs to takr eacj game from here on out like its the most important game of the year. They need to show progress and learn each week and ultimately be ready when they lock up with the Birds.

This game just showed what Cov Cath is capable of when they have a good week of practice, coaches call a good game, and players execute. As I have said before, this team will continue to improve and learn each week. What the coaching staff is doing is not necessarily all about win now at all costs. They are building the foundation for a very successful program. Yes they want to and will try to win now, but they are not about winning now and having to start over each year. Who knows, this game may be looked back on as the one where the lightbulbs went off in the kids heads and they realized how good they can be. Any complaining I heard about after the Ryle game was more 'this coach doesn't know what he is doing because my son should be in on every play' type stuff. Stuff that should be completely disregarded.

CCH figures to get beat this week but then have two winnable games against Campbell and Beechwood. CCH almost has to beat Campbell and Beechwood because if they lose to those two teams they will only win the Scott game and get it handed to them the rest of the year.

You are saying Dixie and NCC will easily beat Cov Cath? Not going to guarantee a win for Cov Cath in both those games (yet) but totally disagree that they will lose handily. I would say 6-4 is very doable this year with the schedule they have, and those 4 potential loses coming against teams that would beat just about anybody in N Ky (Ryle, Highlands, Lou St X and LaSalle). But they do need to keep improving and not take any W for granted, and not go into any game expecting a L either.

I agree. NewCath is smaller and Dixie is, well, Dixie. To be honest, I'm not so sure that Campbell County won't provide the Colonels with a test this year.

Surely this is his biggest coaching win at CCH to date. I think a good number of people felt CCH would win this game, but the margin of victory and CCH's point total was really shocking.

 

What a bizarre way to begin a season... getting absolutely demolished by Ryle and then hammering LexCath in Lexington. Would the real CCH please stand up?!?!

 

If CCH is able to continue the level of play demonstrated against LexCath, what kind of a record could the Colonels achieve? If they play like that against Highlands or Louisville St. Xavier, could they pull off the upset?

I completely agree that such stuff should be completely disregarded. But....if CovCath doesn't win against teams like Dixie and NewCath and at least be competitive in the games they lose to the likes of LaSalle and Highlands, that is the stuff that builds, causes parents to grumble more often and more loudly, has other fans hear it and start repeating it, and then the players start believing it and lose confidence in their coaches. Then the wheels are off. And a coaching staff only gets so many opportunities to try to put the wheels back on. I fully appreciate that CovCath isn't interested in a coaching staff that is all about winning at all costs. I fully appreciate that some CovCath supporters are more interested in things other than wins and losses. But any one that thinks or claims that a majority of CovCath supporters will accept and tolerate a coach that is just a good person and a good CovCath community member whose teams lose often is kidding him/herself. Unless of course the football program has sunk to levels I'd find hard to believe. It may pain some people to admit it, but CovCath football supporters want a Dale Mueller type coach at CovCath: a solid person and great school supporter that also wins a lot of games and makes it deep into the playoffs each year.

 

I personally think this is pivotal year for CovCath's current staff and the ability of CovCath football to rise to back to the top of Ky football in the near future. It's the second year, so the first year excuse is gone. Rodenberg won in his second year. We've been hearing there is again lots of talent on the CovCath team. The no talent excuse is gone (although ironically some people not happy with the prior staff never would acknowledge that there was a lack of talent then and that such may have played a role in the poor win loss record under the prior staff. Please no one needs to respond with the "it wasn't about the lack of wins; it was about the off the field things". I know about the off the field things and I believe a lot of those things were a direct or indirect result of parents and fans first grumbling about playing time and the losses).

 

Admittedly some of the talent on the team this year is young. But with Timmerman, the stable of strong RBs, the returning linemen and Lbers, and the claimed best receiver in N. Ky on that squad, I'm not sure the excuse that "we were young" will fly at the end of the season if CovCath doesn't do well this year.

 

The win over LexCath was temporarily important, then again, we have no idea how good LexCath is this year. LexCath is a good program that's lost a little luster of late. Very few seniors on their team. We'll find out over the rest of the season whether that big win over LexCath was caused by the young players at CovCath finding themselves in the second game or by LexCath's poor performance. It's just way too early to know. I don't think CovCath has to beat LaSalle, but they have to play a competitive game to keep things going right. I doubt that LaSalle will run it up on CovCath even if they can, so I look for CovCath to come out of the game "feeling alright". But the games against Dixie and NewCath are absolutely must win games for the Colonels in my opinion.

 

I agree with the Ru that CovCath almost has to beat Campbell County and Beechwood. No, I'll change that: they have to beat Campbell County and Beechwood. No almost about it. And I think they have to do so in a convincing manner. Personally, I hope they do. I want CovCath to return to challenging Highlands; I need CovCath to return to challenging Highlands. They are and likely will continue to be a district opponent that we have to schedule year in and year out. They are a team in the N. Ky back yard. We need to be pushed more in the district and we need the games to be big for financial reasons. Rivalries diminish or die if one team is always winning by big margins. I'd hate to see that happen between Highlands and CovCath football. I've already seen attendance drop at recent Highlands CovCath games and it concerns me.
