If they didn't achieve enough points, they absolutely did not earn their way in.

Don't forget Lasalle's head coach playing the QB in the opening game 4th QTR blowout win and breaking his collarbone; they would obviously would have had a better shot to beat Northmont with Sheehan.

Fairfield played Elder to an even scrimmage by the way.

Elder coulda beat Massilon in the wonderful comeback, had St. Ed's beat in the 2nd half until they messed up 2 punts, took out the entire 1st team defense vs. Benedictine in a coaching tirade(justified or not-I have no idea) and barely lost. To assume Fairfield wouldn't have done better is presumptuous.

And a team certainly earns their way into the playoffs moreso than any team in KY or IN.

Teams have to beat good teams who win games; it is part of the job description to schedule good teams, unlike KY or IN. Everybody knows the rules going in. It is the best and most fair way possible. That is the facts.

When OH only had 4 teams get into the Region, I would have agreed with you; since they have gone to the top 8, it is perfect.

It is not perfect. It might be the best system for Ohio but it is far from perfect. Going to 8 teams is actually worse for scheduling because now everybody thinks they have a shot at sliding in the 7th or 8th spot if they make out the schedule correctly. When it was 4 teams getting in it was easier to schedule teams because they pretty much knew they weren't a top 4 team so they were more apt to take a game.

LaSalle knows they under-scheduled the last two games and I'm sure is willing to change that if only they can find someone to play.

Elder knows that they over-scheduled on the good teams and need to jettison the bad teams from their schedule. Once again hope KY is in their free call range because the phones will be ringing.

And presumptuous or not, ain't no way Fairfield is beating Massilon, St. Eds, and Cleve. Benedictine this year. And add in losses to St. X, Moeller, Lasalle, Bishop Chatard and Wayne (Fairfield actually lost 28-27, Elder won 21-14). I give Fairfield 2 wins playing Elder's schedule. Oak Hills (who Fairfield actually beat 17-14 while Elder beat them 42-16) and 1-9 West High. 2-8 wouldn't have made it.

I meant perfect for OH.

They did. Fairfield would not.

Elder was 4-6. Playing Elder's schedule Fairfield would be 2-8.

Fairfield was 8-2. Playing Fairfield's schedule Elder would be 9-1 or 10-0.

I don't think it is that cut and dry.

How could it not be?

Look at common opponents Wayne and Oak Hills.

Look at the fact that Fairfield did not have to play Colerain or Lakota East this year.

Bottom line is Fairfield did what they had to do. Beat enough of the bad teams on the schedule, get a break of not playing your own good league teams, lose to the other good teams on your schedule. That equals Playoffs.

Elder (and other schools) blew it by not scheduling enough average or bad teams that they could beat. If I were Elder I'd be on the phone to Boone Co., Ryle, Dixie, Simon Kenton, or Campbell Co. or whoever else might win 6 games in KY next year. See ya West High, see ya Benedictine, see ya Massilon, hellooooo Playoffs.

The Wayne scores are within 8 points; that hardly makes it cut and dry. There is more discrepancy in the Oak Hills scores, but that hardly means Fairfield couldn't have beaten Elder. The X scores are closer as well, 44-10 vs. 45-0.

Elder handed it to Chatard also, so to presume Fairfield wouldn't have beaten them is not a gimme.

Elder is probably a little better, but they could have been in the playoffs if they had made a few more plays. It is never going to be exact because no two teams are going to play the exact same schedule.

See thats the key. It doesn't really matter who could beat who, they could be dead equal (although I do think Elder is better). What matters is who had the right schedule. No way (0% chance) that Fairfield makes the playoffs playing Elder's schedule. Very probable (90 to 100%) chance Elder makes it playing Fairfield's schedule.

For all those that say the Harbins come out okay in the end and the best 8 teams get in I disagree.

NKY teams need to figure out a way to stop just being harbin cows. Beat the Ohio teams and maybe they will not schedule you!!

I'd rather Ohio teams play KY teams instead of teams from Canada.

What it comes down to is Elder didn't make the plays they needed to.

I agree Elder is probably better, but they still had a schedule that was not insurmountable, which could have gotten them in the playoffs-again the responsibility falls on the head coach/AD. Would Elder have won a game with Fairfield, probably; but it is not absolute that they would have won either.

Last year Lasalle got in going 6-4 because they played tougher teams and won; this year they were a better team but chose to play weaker teams and chose to play the QB in the 4th Qtr of a blowout, which cost them a chance at another victory.

Again it easy to criticize without a solution; the Harbin system is perfect for OH, unless they wanted to water down the playoffs like IN & KY.

You NKY football people are unreal.

BTW, what's this "YOU NKY people" stuff? How can a Conner Cougar not be a NKY guy?

cshs81,

You just can't trust them Conner people. ;)

I've given solutions such as there has to be a way to account for a "good" team losing to a "good" team in the Harbins. The idea keeps getting kicked around in Ohio but nothing gets done. You would see a lot more quality games and a lot more teams willing to take games they are not likely to win if the Harbins ever become anything other than a "must win to get points" system.

How would you OBJECTIVELY calculate a good team???

Winning record? Isn't that dependent on who they played, who may be terrible?

What if they have a winning record early in the season, but not at the end?

What if a team loses by 1, and another by 10, and another by 21 to the same team?

What if a team is only losing by 6, trying to make a comeback, and throws an INT for a TD and loses by 13? Would that change the points?

There is no objective way to do this; as the system stands now, it is completely objective based on the sizes of the schools. That is why nothing gets done.
