Kentucky Athletes Lose Ground To Indiana Athletes

Featured Replies

Bylaw 8. Contestant On Other Teams, Post Season and All-

Star Games

Any student who after enrolling in grade nine (9) has been a

contestant in football or basketball at any level (grades 9-12) and

has eligibility remaining in that sport may not participate on any

non-school sponsored team or in any all-star game in that sport

or any variation of that sport from the first day of school through

the last scheduled contest played in that sport (including KHSAA

sanctioned post-season) by that school unless it has been sanctioned

by the Board of Control. Following the team’s last scheduled game

(including post season), there are no restrictions on play in that

specific sport for the student-athletes.

A rule that needs changing asap. This is another reason our athletes leave our great state for other options. In the state of Indiana you can play in events such as leagues that lets the athlete continue to compete in the off season. These leagues stop way before the official day of first practice for the athletes.

I dont understand why the KHSAA has the control over ones child before a team has or may have been picked before Oct 15. As it is written its a rule that sidelines the athlete before the sport has officially began and limits his or her chances of getting better. After talking to many high school coaches most feel the same on this rule.

I have to agree with you here. This is a very restricting rule. I have heard Indiana is holding camps and tournaments for the next month or so.

A big detractor for our KY kids. I have several that would like to continue BB in a league until practice starts but cannot due to this rule.

This is stupid. Just because it's always been this way doesn't mean it's the right way or should be this way. Kids basically can't play any organized basketball for 2 months. Let's demand a change!

The rule may be a problem but KY is not losing kids because of it.

Don't you think this kids need a little break before their HS season gets started?

They play from October 15 through March, that is not counting open gyms and conditioning/weights that start in September. They play AAU ball in April and May. June with their HS team and back to AAU in July and the first part of August.

I think it would be smart to take a little time off.

No one forces anyone to play. Not a fan of the mandate.

If there was no mandate then some of these athletes would be pressured into playing. This way there is no pressure if they want to take a month or so off.

As it is, if they want to work on their game in an organized way, they can't. I think the rule is goofy. I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree. The Oct. 15 date could still be in place. Kids in Louisville, for instance, could play league play at HOOPS or somewhere else. I think this rule has the propensity to continue to drive kids away from playing h.s. bball and into AAU alone. At least some of the premier players.

They can still work on their game. It is a great time for them to do individual work. They can also have open gyms with their team or with other players from other schools.

They can also hit the weight room. There is plenty to do if they want but if an athlete chooses to take a break there is no pressure on them to continue to play.

I just don't see the pressure you see for them to do something outside the school. Seems the Oct 15 restriction in place would allow similar opportunities you outlined, without restricting kids who want to do more. I just can't see limiting kids if they want to play. What about those kids? Just out of luck with this rule IMO.

Pressure could be from parents, AAU coaches, or others. If they want to play they can find pick up games and work on their individual game. They play almost year round as it is. They need a break.

Again, I diametrically disagree.

That is fine. You have a right to your opinion.

Mine is based on past experience and dealing with the players in the past and now.
