Inversion table

Featured Replies

Has anyone tried using one of these things to help alleviate back pain? If so, did it help at all?

Inversion tables have been around for quite a while. For some they are pretty successful. They were the hot item after richard Gere made the movie American Gigalo, using inversion boots. (late seventies early 80's) This fad caught on and before long physical therapy departments across the nation were using them as well. Until, suddenly reports of a few patients having strokes. They literally disappeared overnight. Gradually inversion tables have made a return, most people do not hang fully upside down and still get full results. I see occasionally someone who uses them beneficially.

Were you able to find anything out? Did you end up getting one?

Reason why I ask is, that I've been experiencing some lower back pain on a regular basis here in the past couple of weeks, and looking for some relief (other than thru pills). Was wondering if anyone could attest to how well they work or not?

From experience I can truly tell you that pills do not give relief. I am a big believer in using cold packs and a circulating ice machine and try to stay off your feet for a while if possible and some disc problems improve. Tried the inversion table several years ago when I first injured my back. Could not use it fully upside down, got a terrible headache. My injury was pretty severe and I was hoping it would decompress the vertebrae. I tried traction also with no improvement. Here I am 4 surgeries later and hoping some of this last one works with cages, screws, plates and rods. These may help some people if it's a bulged disc but I would not recommend any complete inversion. Good Luck and protect that back.

Yoga. Particularly Diamond Dallas Page DDP yoga. He has a back, hip, and knee opener DVD that works great. And, no, I am not kidding

Look up Yin Yoga if you are active. It is not a lot of movement, or holding warriors like many people think of when they thing of yoga. It is more stationary and holding stretches for 3 to 5 minutes at a time. It is a great counter-balance to the strain on your muscles from working out. I do it b/c I lift, run, and do Jiu Jitsu.

If you are inactive mostly, then it would be a good idea to go to a Pilates class to strengthen your abs and back and get some flexibility. That is the root of a lot of lower back pain, assuming no slipped disks or structural issues in the spinal column.
