July 12, 201016 yr Author I've been paying attention, got him a new helmet but has trouble turning side to side. The bottom of the helmet hits his shoulder pads. These pads are for lneman and are too big. He has a short neck too. He is too heavy to run the ball, 145 lb. limit. We found a field with goal posts and let him kick some extra points. When he used his body with follow thru he hit several with 20 yards to spare. And finding goal posts was an adventure, everything locked up. We are gonna kick every day, coaches know he has a soccer background. But hey, the posts are so wide, Mama could hit those. Next Monday they start with pads.
July 12, 201016 yr Larry, I would fill up a gallon jug of water and keep it in the refrigerator. Make sure he drinks the whole gallon from the time practice is over until the time it starts the next day. Also make sure he is eating right. People sometimes get so consumed with hydration they forget to eat properly. Lots of carbs and protein, no junk food. You may consider having him weigh every morning as soon as he gets out of bed. If he is droping too much weight he isn't rehydrating or eating properly.
July 13, 201016 yr Author Thank you, ^^^ he is about 15/20 lbs over weight. He is a thick kid. His Doctor said when he hits his growth spurt it will help him thin out. His brothers were built the same and they did "thin out". Think of the kid on the show Two and a half men, Jake as he grows he loses weight. His sprints are killing him and the leg lifts, well I turn away. Told by the Coach he will get a new helmet or one better than we got, take back the new one, we are happy about that. $$$$
July 13, 201016 yr AL Nice work and interesting. Good luck you you and him. Please keep us posted on his progress.
July 13, 201016 yr Author Thanks Jim, Lookin forward to the fall season and speaking with you. We have to meet up at a game. And this also goes for everyone. Male/ Highview. Weight machine is lonely, he walks around with the lifting gloves on. I don't push. He says 'waiting on you dad".
July 15, 201016 yr Author Back to the "HOT" of my thread. Hottest day of the year coming up. Also heard it might be the Hottest in the last three years. They moved practice back a half of hour. Today he had soccer practice, and we took some advice we got on here and drank water during the day, no cokes.
July 16, 201016 yr Author Coaches took it easy on the kids. Hottest day in three years. They looked at kickers/punters/kick offs/. Coach came up to my son and said "work with your dad on the extra points/Field goals. Thats gonna be your job." Several kids had stronger legs but he had a nice foot going. I was surprised how well he did kicking in front of everyone. Coaches called him "Soccer guy". First day of contact on Monday. Have no idea how he will react, but I'd love to tell y'all he has a new nickname...Butkus! Ok, just playing around.

July 19, 201016 yr Author I got the water idea going pretty good. He just finished his last soccer tourny until next spring. First day in pads tomorow. He asked.."what do I wear under my practice pants?"
August 12, 201016 yr Author Its been almost three weeks, here is an update. There is a weight limit and he has to be a lineman. The backs have to be under 145 lbs. He is no lineman and its not pretty. He has been hit/drilled/pancaked/double teamed/yell at/yelled at some more. The team tied their practice game and season starts on Saturday. The thread had HOT in it and we all know whats going on. Not once has he mentioned quiting. I've been working on PATs and he has done OK. The coach told him "we are going to try place kicks". He has a soccer background remember I mentioned earlier. He has hit a 25 yard field goal and we taped him and he did it again. Just family. So yesterday they got the holder and they prepared the OL/DL and wanted to see him try extra points. He tried around 10, hit 8 and kicked the ball over the return kids head. They were really happy. You get two points on a PAT. There were a couple of bad snaps and he adjusted and still drilled it. The coach told him..."go over there and just kick with your Dad". Son asked me.."but dad you & Mom paid money and all I do will PATs?" I said nothing. The Middle school coach has asked me if he can kick for the school team on Thursdays, we said no. I'll let you know how he does. He keeps his head down and doesn't try to kill it. Edited August 12, 201016 yr by Alabama Larry Spel
August 23, 201016 yr Author Won their second game today. He hit two extra poingts! Both right down the middle and high. On the first one I had my sunglasses on and was taping. I was so nervous I forgot to turn on the camera. After he hit it I turned to Mama and told her..."For crying out loud, I'm crying!" He has really worked hard. By making the first one it made the other team have to try one to keep up and they missed. The second one was also very nice. And folks were talking about him and they didn't know who I was as I walked by. What a great feeling.
August 23, 201016 yr Kids today are weaker it seems like. They need to learn to cowboy up. I think it is easy to call out the kids, but I blame the parents who do not force their kids to play outside, be active, and adjust to the heat properly.
August 31, 201016 yr Author We are 3-0! We scored 4 Tds and the kid hit two straight extra points, they got thru the uprights but not real solid. On the 3rd one he was wide left. Plenty of distance. I spoke to him from behind the bench and just told him to go into the ball a little faster. His forth kick was hard and true right down the middle. This one you could hear the thump. Its a 20 yard kick for the 2 points and this one had 10/15 yards to spare. His best kick so far. 5-7 so far, and not bad for a kid who has never played football before.
