.. I've often heard that a rising tide floats all boats. I've seen no evidence; particularly when one doesn't even own a leaky dinghy.

I am not judging how anyone spends their money. My main point was once the cash is in hand, working a few more hours to put a little back doesn't even enter the mindset. The extra money and the security that would come with it just isn't important. My intention is not to devalue anyone either, but try as I might, you can only help someone up so far, and then they have to pull.

Doesn't sound like it refutes the original claim, it just adds conservatives to the growing list of those who don't understand economics.

My point is a matter of logic...if a person needs money, but is not interested in putting in effort to achieve it, then logic tells me that it is not that important to that person.

Let's see ... farm ... 1932 ... six kids. Which means land for livestock to graze upon and land to plow for crops, as well as a built-in supply of free labor.

 

I got news for you -- poor folks living in Section 8 housing don't really have those same opportunities your grandfather had. Not much available land for tilling in the projects.

Had a buddy who was approached about helping out an urban area with jobs. He's a contractor who actually has a ton of work. He worked with the guy and they set up a system where the people WOULD BE PICKED UP IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND BROUGHT TO THE JOB SITE. Pay was ok-$11 an hour for unskilled labor. That's $440 a week. First day 11 show up. Second day 5. 2 the next couple days then nobody on Friday. 11 opportunities for full time work thrown away.

IMO many of the poor are mired in a culture not caused by a poor economy or lack of opportunity.

It may not be 1932, but my grandfather used what was availible to him, no whining, just hard work.

The world today is different, but it is the hard work that counts. I know a lot of people who could do better, but they don't mind just getting by on the few dollars they earn and all the government hanouts they receive. We have created a mentality not just among those who are on the bottom of the economic scale, but we have created a class of enablers to support these individuals. A mentality of whining that someone else has more and it is not fair, so let us take from those who have more and just give it to those who are not willing to sacrifice to improve their lives.

Even with that said there are still many who believe that hard work will get them ahead and are willing to work and not whine about the situation their in.

I'm not saying there's not lazy people out there, but the bottom line is people can't work 16- and 20-hour days just to make ends meet while still not getting anywhere. And while they're working, who watches the kids? If a living wage is not available -- and let's be honest, it ain't available for a significant chunk of America, a chunk that grows daily because the "job creators" don't feel the need to do what's right for their country -- it's no wonder folks take the easy way out and go on the draw.

You are automatically blaming the problems on the people who are 'rich'. It isn't that simple. Everyone is to blame. You want to simply going on a taxing binge and then redistribute that money the Gov't collects and think that will magically solve all of our problems. It won't. How hard is that to figure out?
