Russ Shearer named new Bellevue head coach

Featured Replies

Was supposed to be hired earlier but there was a problem with teaching job. I heard he has to take college classes this summer to be able to teach in the school. Also expect veer from the Tigers

Great hire for Bellevue but I still am not expecting the veer with the personnel they have returning.

Tell us about the guy.

Russell Shearer has been hired as the football coach at Bellevue, according to school athletic director Nick Wilson. Shearer previously was the defensive dacks coach and video coordinator for the University of the Cumberlands. He is a 1997 graduate of Estill County High School.

This from Ryan Ernst blog. The question is why would they hire someone who has to take college courses this summer to coach? What would happen if he was to not pass those classes?

I agree veer is not the best option for this team, but just what I have heard from a few people. Slater needs to run north and south big powerful runner. I also heard that is what the delay was all about. I mean the guy should be fine. Best of luck to coach shearer.

The classes are just a formality. The big hold up was the state not releasing a budget. Bellevue super just wanting to make sure no big surprise cuts coming when the state does actually get off their duffs and send something out.

Met the man and he seems like a pretty confident coach and hopefully will do well at Bellevue.

As posted in the Bellevue 2010 thread, here is Coach Shearer's Linked In profile:

Congrats to Bellevue on thinking outside the box and making a fresh and different type of hire. Best of luck to the Tigers and Coach Shearer.

Agree with that I'm glad they didn't do what was expected and looked for and found the best possible candidate.

What was expected?

What was expected?

The hiring of Chad Montgomery, everyone in Dayton and Bellevue and if you know Chad you would have expected it. Probably would have gotten the job if they had an open teaching position.

I know that Estill County runs a veer option/ wing t offense. Is he going to retain any of the assistant coaches from the Eckstien era? IMO if he doesnt it will hurt his chances of bonding quickly with his new team! Best of luck to him though Everyone knows the community of Bellevue is a very supportive group and that should benefit him in the best way possible.

Is it me or does anyone else think that from reading the link from VOR think that this will be a "stepping stone" job for Coach Shearer?

I just don't see how this guy was the right fit for Bellevue. Don't you want your coach to be able to teach as well? He has no track record of that. And his best college experience is at the NAIA level with no coordinator experience. How does he fit into the culture in the building with the other teachers? Just seems puzzling to me...

Doesn't everybody have to start somewhere? Every head coach was a first time head coach somewhere. Every teacher had a first year at some time. Coach Shearer will do a fine job. The question is: Is the talent this year as good as it was last year? If the talent is not as good, and the record dips, will people point their fingers at the coach?

I agree 100% that everyone must start somewhere. I just don't think you want your first year head coach being a first year teacher. If he's just now starting classes, that means he's going to have to continue taking classes. That's a lot going on at one time for anyone.

Is that a bad thing? Look at the Xavier Musketeers or the Butler Bulldogs in NCAA basketball. If you are able to keep bringing in the top candidate, the program will benefit. I have no clue how good a coach Shearer is, but if he comes in and does such a good job that he is gone in 3-5 years, then that will mean some nice success for Bellevue. If that happens, then everyone should be happy for the success, wish Coach Shearer the best in his next stop and look for an equally good coach to replace him.
