Transfer rules with 2 schools in same county

Featured Replies

How do counties stop kids from just transferring to the other school.

For example if a kid at Madison Central wants to transfer to Madison Southern then can he jsut up and go or does Madison co. have a special rule. Do other counties have special rules other than KHSAA rules.

Do not forget the main thing in the rule if you are talking about a case where this happened. You always must ask first ... did the player play varsity sports for the first school? If the player did not play any varsity sports, he can switch schools any time he wants and be eligible. If he did play varsity, then the same rules apply.

Same rules apply, schools each have boundaries and addresses that feed them.

Not necessarily true. The district can determine what those boundaries are. For example, Kenton County has open enrollment and if you live in Kenton County, you can choose which of the three Kenton County schools to attend.

And ironically, that choice can determine whether you play basketball in the 8th Region (Simon Kenton), 9th Region (Dixie Heights) or the 10th Region (Scott High)

What about in Pulaski? What are the rules for Pulaski, Somerset, and SW Pulsaki

Kenton County has open enrollment. That basically means a student can choose to attend any of the three high schools he/she wants regardless of which high school's "district" they are in. However, the KHSAA transfer rules still apply. So if an athlete plays in a VARSITY game for one school, he/she would have to sit a year or meet one of the waivers to play at another school.

KHSAA Transfer rules would apply.

Whether they have open enrollment, you would need to contact the Pulaski County board office.

Pulaski County does not have open enrollment. Somerset school district is in the middle of the other two, but does not include all of the city limits as the city has grown but the county would not give up those students. Pulaski gets northern and eastern parts of the county as well as most of the city. Southwestern gets the westerern and southern areas..duh and a small part of the city. There is an agreement between systems as to the number of kids that can live in the county and go to the city schools. Any kid living in the city may attend the county schools with no recourse.

All KSHAA transfer rules apply however.

IF it's a legit move AND they DO NOT transfer for athletic purpose!

Of course, as with all situations, it also depends on who the kid is, how good he/she is, and who Mommy and Daddy know.

I know they did adopt a rule at one time(10-12 years ago) in the PC school system that said if you transferred for ANY reason you had to sit one year. A couple of kids moved during the season to play for the other school, then went back after the season was over. Obviously that rule is no longer in effect.
