I have no real agenda in this thread but thought it would be a great topic to discuss and see if the statement that has been used a lot has some validity or not.

You didn't hear the religous ideological war beause you live here-see that is the funny thing-there are two sides to every story and you actually have to listen to the other side to know what they are thinking.

 

Man I was a conservative before I got on here-now I see why the Liberals get so disgusted-the right is more interested in being loud than correct.

The fact that the Jews were persecuted doesn't make it the central point of the war. :idunno:

 

Hitler was trying to take over the continent of Europe. He wasn't just killing Jews. Do you think the rest of Europe was fighting to defend their countries or save Jews?

 

Saddam Hussein may have used religion to manipulate his people, I don't know. But, its not the reason he invaded Kuwait.

 

Why do we have troops in the Middle East right now? Because Obama inherited a war with no exit strategy. That's one guess.

Religion is the excuse they cook up to validate war. Most common wars are not fought because of it IMO.

Water is the reason for most of the wars in history. Land/water would be next. Religion is used to convince the people the God is on their side in the war.

For the Massachusetts Bay colony, yes that's true. But the Virginia colony came about for a much different reason: to make money.

It's interesting that abolishing slavery is considered the reason for the civil war, but Lincoln in fact only wanted to stop it from spreading. Initially, he didn't call to stop slavery in the existing slave states, but to not allow any other states to become slave states.

 

At an individual level, there were various reasons men chose to fight. Some in the south felt like the federal government was trying to wield power beyond it's right, thus infringing upon the states rights. Some, especially in Virginia, fought to defend their home from a federal invasion. In a very real sense, they were fighting for their homes and their freedom.

 

In the north, some fought to preserve the union. They did not want to see the United States of America fall apart.

 

War can be a complex thing, especially at an individual level. I can certainly sympathize with both sides to some degree.

 

Imagine if you were an army officer from Virginia and the president asked you to lead a group of men into your home state to fire upon your own people...perhaps even watch your own home become part of a battlefield. Would you have fought to preserve the Union, or defended you home state? Hopefully, none of us will ever have to make that decision.

 

I also sympathize with men who felt like our Union was something worth preserving, that the United States was a unique country founded on ideas that had never been tried before.

 

The civil war is a tragic and fascinating story to me.
