May 5, 201016 yr Religion has been the cause of more wars than any other reason in history and it continues to this day The above was posted in another thread and I have heard it mentioned many times. I am not sure it is true. What wars have we had in this country that Religion caused?

The ones we are in right now in Afganastan and Iraq are tinged with religion. 09/11 was a terroist act, act of war, done by hostile radical muslims acting out against the Judeo/Christian society we have in the West. I am not sure it is true. What wars have we had in this country that Religion caused? How many wars have we had in this country? There aren't many if any that occured in this country that were caused by Religion but you can't limited to this country only. How many wars that occurred though out the world were caused by religion.
May 5, 201016 yr Author Why does it matter if they were in this country or not? Just using that question as a part of the discussion point. As I posed the initial question that covered all wars, I thought it was only reasonable to also focus on the wars we have been directly in and see how many was caused by religion.

Well back in the early 2000's when W was moving this country to war, most of the opponents said Iraq was a war about oil and not religion. Remember, it was about W finishing the job his dad did not and that NO Al Quiada were in Iraq. So, I do not believe you can count Iraq as a religious war.
May 5, 201016 yr THat is the question I posed for discussion. Sorry, I misunderstood what you were asking. If you consider any war this country has been in then you would have to define which were actual wars.
May 5, 201016 yr I don't think it's true. I think people in power have often used religion to manipulate and control the masses in support of a war, but greed, power, money, land, etc., is more often the cause, IMO. Of course, I haven't gone back to study every war in history. American Revolution - Independence. Mexican-American War - Land. Civil War - Slavery, states rights, etc...not religion. WWI & WWII - German power grabs? Korea, Vietnam - Stopping the spread of communism? Desert Storm - Invasion of Kuwait. That's some major American wars...none have been centered around religion.

I await your definition as I don't want to hog the discussion and points being made.
May 5, 201016 yr I've always thought that idea to be baseless attack on religion and a fundamental misunderstanding of animal nature. The desire to fight and kill is a base desire, an animalistic desire. In fact, I firmly believe that, when followed correctly, Christianity ought to be something that helps people to overcome such base instincts. I simply don't believe that if there was no religion that people wouldn't find reasons to kill each other. If the point is that we could reduce the number and frequency of wars if there were no religion then maybe I can see something there: it is our differences and fears of those differences that are one of the things that can lead to war. But I feel most use religion as an excuse for what is really a political goal.

Civil War - Slavery, states rights, etc...not religion. WWI & WWII - German power grabs? (Not the persecution of the Jews?) Korea, Vietnam - Stopping the spread of communism? Desert Storm - Invasion of Kuwait. (Power grab to be sure, but Saddam was trying to force our hand to have a war based on religious ideology.) That's some major American wars...none have been centered around religion. (NOT TRUE) Plus our walking hand in hand with Isreal and our belief that they should have a homeland which came about as of us winning WWII has created GREAT animosity towards us and Isreal in the Middle East.

WWII we got into because of a little thing called Pearl Harbor. That was Japan and had nothing to do with Jews. And then Germany declared war on us because of an alliance they had with Japan. (reminds me of the alliance between Russell and Parvati:D) 3) I think Saddam wanted oil, pure and simple.

I think he wanted to be revered as a Muslim leader in the middle east, and thought by picking a fight with us, then he could declare that the tilt was on between the Christians and Muslims and be looked to as the area's leader. Saddam was a coward that hid behind his countrymen and his religion.
