Scutaro had a career year last year ... enough said.

I have to think that Ortiz is on his last legs with Boston as a starter. He's still capable of hitting homeruns but his bat has slowed way down. In order to catch up with a good fastball he has to cheat and start his swing early. He used to be able to sit back and drive the ball all over the park. Almost all of his homers now come to rightfield. By trying to speed his bat up by pulling everything it leaves him vunerable to offspeed pitches and anything hard away. That's why his average has dropped and his strikeouts have went way up. He's really just a mistake hitter now. Its been painful to watch him struggle like he has after all the great memories he provided the last 7 years. A lot of people will blame it on the steroids but I honestly don't think his wrist has every been the same since he hurt it in 2008.

 

As for Dunn, I haven't heard anything solid on that. I think their hope is that the Padres cool down and decide to deal Gonzalez. If not I could see them making a deal for Dunn if they can stay afloat until the All-Star break. I don't think it'll happen until closer to the deadline because it would require that Ortiz, Lowell or both be DFA or traded.

 

Who are they going to deal? Ellsbury would have to be in the deal. They aren't just going to be able to send a Delcarmen over. Also, if AGON plays first does Youkilis go to LF... yikes?

The Red Sox have the prospects to make the trade. I don't think they would include Ellsbury, and I'm not sure that the Padres would be interested since he's getting close to being arbitration eligible.

 

Casey Kelly I'm sure would be on San Diego's radar as well as Ryan Kalish, Josh Reddick, Michael Bowden, Lars Anderson or Anthony Rizzo. Daniel Bard and Delcarmen are players on the big league club that are often mentioned in trade rumors as well.

 

The Red Sox have a very deep minor league system.

 

Of course if the Rays and Yankees continue their pace the Sox could still try to trade for Gonzalez to retool for 2011 while being sellers at the deadline. Lowell, Ortiz, Beltre and even Papelbon could be dealt for prospects or included in a 3 way deal of the type that landed Jason Bay.

I think Papi is clearly done. A lot of pressure was on JD Drew this year, I know from our past conversations your a Drew guy, I am not. He is playing better but isn't going to carry them. Worst part about this Sox team is the personality, it's just not there.

Beltre is only signed to a 1 year deal. Youkilis would move over to third. If the Yankees and Rays continue their pace their is a good chance that the Gonzalez move would be made with 2011 in mind and players like Beltre, Ortiz, Lowell, Scutaro and even Papelbon could be included in multi-team deals like the one that netted Jason Bay in 2008.

Martinez has thrown runners out stealing in each of his last 3 games. He's not great by any means back there but he isn't nearly as bad as he looked the day he gave up 9 steals. Remember Wakefield was on the mound that night. After only throwing out 1 of the first 25 baserunners attempting to steal he has thrown out 6 of the last 9.

 

And I like the Red Sox chances in a bidding war with the White Sox....the Red Sox have the better prospects.

David Ortiz makes $13 million & his contract is up after this season, I think. Red Sox have a $12.5 million option, which will most likely get declined. He hasn't hit over .300 since '07 and his inability to play the field (combined with his inability to hit) basically ruin his trade value.

 

Mike Lowell makes $12.5 million & will be a FA after this season. He produces at a respectable level, but has not eclipsed 120 games in each of the past 2 seasons. At 36, his value is very limited.

 

Adrian Beltre makes $9 million and has a $5 million player option after this season, if he can reach 640 plate appearances (which I doubt he does).

 

Papelbon makes $9.35 million.

 

Even Bill Hall makes $8.525 million, for crying out loud.

 

Which team or teams do you think would be interested in any of those players, except for Papelbon? I can't think of a single team who would / could trade for any of them, much less include a burgeoning star like Bay.

 

The Red Sox got a steal with Bay because Pittsburgh knew they wouldn't be able to keep him around.
