May 5, 201016 yr David Ortiz makes $13 million & his contract is up after this season, I think. Red Sox have a $12.5 million option, which will most likely get declined. He hasn't hit over .300 since '07 and his inability to play the field (combined with his inability to hit) basically ruin his trade value. Mike Lowell makes $12.5 million & will be a FA after this season. He produces at a respectable level, but has not eclipsed 120 games in each of the past 2 seasons. At 36, his value is very limited. Adrian Beltre makes $9 million and has a $5 million player option after this season, if he can reach 640 plate appearances (which I doubt he does). Papelbon makes $9.35 million. Even Bill Hall makes $8.525 million, for crying out loud. Which team or teams do you think would be interested in any of those players, except for Papelbon? I can't think of a single team who would / could trade for any of them, much less include a burgeoning star like Bay. The Red Sox got a steal with Bay because Pittsburgh knew they wouldn't be able to keep him around. The reason that those players have any trade value is that their contracts are up after the season. The Red Sox are able to pay most, if not all of the remainder of their contracts if they are traded. There will be several teams that will need a bat at the trading deadline that will be willing to deal if they don't have to pick up a long-term contract. The Sox also have the prospects to package with some of their veterans. If you don't think that the Red Sox have the ability to trade for someone like Gonzalez you're fooling yourself.

But very few of the players you listed have any significant trade value at all. They may be able to get a few prospects, but there is absolutely no chance that they could trade those players (Ortiz, Lowell, Beltre, etc.) for a player of Jason Bay's caliber, as you suggested. And I don't consider one team's payment to another team to take a player as giving that player "trade value." Aaron Harang has "trade value" if the Reds pay $10 million when they trade him.
May 5, 201016 yr If the Sox wait till July they might be out of it. They really need Tampa/NY to cool off. I don't see San Diego just taking anything like Cleveland did. Anderson and Elsbury would be a fair trade more than likely. Gonzo has a friendly contract right now as well... SD holds all of the cards.

Teams generally don't just sell players off but a contending team might be willing to deal prospects for a short term rental if they don't have to pick up the whole tab. The Sox then spin those prospects along with others to a team like the Padres for an experienced player like Gonzalez. Guys like Ortiz, Lowell and Beltre are only of use to a team that needs a bat for the stretch run or has an injury and needs to plug a hole.

I didn't post it to give you a hard time. You hadn't said much about the Sox slow start, and I was wanting your thoughts, and to see if there was need for concern especially considering the great starts that both the Rays and Yankees had. I will start the Week 6 thread though, but if they go 5-2 again this week I'm done.
