April 7, 201016 yr If gas soars up over $3.00 again this summer with the financial tightening that is already happening, it is going to get real bad in this country. What can the Dems do, since they are the ones that hold all the needed votes, to lessen this? I know in my budget if gas soars to $3.50 again, it will be real tight for us. Like me trying to fit into a size 32 jeans. Not a pretty sight, I'll tell ya.
April 7, 201016 yr Thankfully I only have a 9 mile commute to work, but if gas hits $3.50 this summer the kiddos are going to be dissapointed because the family vaction to the beach may be out.
April 7, 201016 yr Gas hitting 3.00 the first week of April is a terrible sign. It's very hard to believe we won't hit 3.25-3.35 by summer. The kids aren't even out of school yet. However, the "experts" say we won't get much above that. Obama said he would go after speculators and big oil so we will see. So far he hasn't done anything.
April 7, 201016 yr Gas going up again will kill the recreational industry. Motorhome builders are already struggling, take a hit again this summer there might not be 3-4 left, then it starts hitting the boating, atv/motorcycle industry............ How is the Houseboat industry doing down in Somerset?
April 7, 201016 yr So with our economy still in the red, unemployment at 9.7% and home values still down... what would gas prices be if we were "back" or the economy is booming? 4.00? It amazes me that were able to get to 3.00 in these conditions.
April 7, 201016 yr Author My wife and I are teachers and get paid once a month. So, we have to budget everything out on a monthly basis. Presently, I buy $275 worth of gas cards the day we get paid and that is our gas for the month. The summer it got up to $4.00, I was up to buying $400 a month in gas cards. $125 is a lot in my budget.
April 7, 201016 yr Author With the health care fiasco and if gas prices do get up to $3.50 that might be a perfect storm for the Democrats to have to face in November. I ask again. What do they need to be doing now to prevent this in the summer?
April 7, 201016 yr Gas and oil prices in this country are not driven by supply and demand. Futures market.
April 7, 201016 yr Author Gas and oil prices in this country are not driven by supply and demand. Futures market. So, what is the answer to preventing an ailing economy from not catching a nasty disease of high gas prices?

How is the Houseboat industry doing down in Somerset? The gas prices shouldn't have the same affect on the atv/motorcycle industry as it would the boating and rv industry. Gas is not that big of an expense with the atv/motorcycle industry.
April 7, 201016 yr Gas and oil prices in this country are not driven by supply and demand. Futures market. You sir are correct. Anyone remember Enron and what they did to the state of California? Well... the traders are taking a page out of their book.

Like me trying to fit into a size 32 jeans. Not a pretty sight, I'll tell ya. I read an article earlier this week on MSN. Said it would not be unrealistic to see $150.00 a barrel oil and $4.00 a gallon gas this summer. I don't know where he got his numbers but I'll see if I can find the article again.
April 7, 201016 yr Please explain. It would take a while. But Enron was an energy trading company who traded on future markets. They had a big piece of the pie in California, California kept them alive there last few years. Basically... Enron traders, who were caught on tape saying, "Burn, baby, burn!" as wildfires destroyed power transmission lines in California right during the rolling blackouts. Why would Enron traders want transmission lines to burn? Because scarcity creates profits. And Enron traders, the world now knows, fabricated scarcity by exporting power from California and shutting down power plants under false pretenses. Enron traders didn't just go along, they plotted the demise of the California economy for their own personal gain. Fast forward to today with the speculators in oil markets. Anytime one little thing happens (refinery closed for maintenance, violence in Nigera), oil prices go up. OPEC themselves have said there is plenty of oil. It is the false pretenses and fabricated excuses that makes oil prices go up.

Does OPEC themselves not control the supply of oil to the market so that they can keep prices at a level they like it? They may say there is plenty of oil but they don't allow that plenty of oil to actually make the market or it would drive down prices.
