Rick Parsons named head coach at Shelby County

Featured Replies

The Mike Clark Era has ended at Shelby County High School.

Rick Parsons will be named today the new SCHS boys’ head basketball coach, replacing Clark, who is moving to Martha Layne Collins High School as an assistant principal.

Parsons, originally from Harlan, currently teaches physical education at Shelby County High School. He has several years of experience as a head coach around the state.

“We’re really excited about getting him in this position,” Athletic Director Sally Zimmerman said. “He blew us away in the interview.”

Details about Parsons’ experience will come during his announcement today, but an Internet search of his coaching history revealed stints at Menifee County, Cumberland County, Jackson City, Everts, where in 2001 he was named the 13th Region coach of the year, and, most recently, Frankfort High School.

He has experience in both boys and girls basketball.

Zimmerman said Parsons will be bringing on Charles Thomas, a former Harlan player who was Kentucky’s Mr. Basketball in 1995, as one of his assistant coaches.

Congratulations to Coach Parsons.

I talked to another candidate earlier today, and he was telling me he was told there wouldn't be an announcement until Friday.

Wow.

I saw Rick at the state tournament with some Shelby County people.

The story butchered both Harlan County names. It was Cumberland, not Cumberland County, and it's Evarts, not Everts.

Probably will do very well to get through one season....terrible hire!!!!

Congrats! but so many stories ! wow !

I'm a little surprised by this hire. :idunno::popcorn:

I remember him coaching at Evarts if this is the same guy. He was very loud and noticeable. He had a pretty good team in 2001 at Evarts.

I believe he also was the head coach at Cumberland in the late 90's. He has not coached in several years.

With the talent Shelby County has had in the recent years, you would think they would have more people wanting to come there. Parsons was a mediocre hire at best. I'm not sure what they were thinking.

In reading the posts, does this sound like a temporary hire during the transition in hopes of someone else that is planning to be available next season?
