madman Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Congrats to Anderson County. They will be around for several years.
Mr. Athletics Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 SK missed some easy shots early and shot poorly throughout the game from 3 point land. Anderson's size on the interior took away the inside game. Anderson came ready to play and jumped out on them early. I know I for one underestimated the defensive ability of the Lady Bearcats. Winning on SK's home court has to be very sweet for them. Congratulations to Tony and his girls. Good luck at Diddle.
GatorFan Posted March 7, 2010 Author Posted March 7, 2010 Congrats to Anderson County. They will be around for several years. Yes they will.
NEERFAN Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 AC has a very solid squad, and they are a young bunch to boot. I thought the Neers were going to pull it out once they cut the lead to one in the 4th but the combo of bad shooting and strong defense by the Cats prevailed.
ebrown5606 Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Too little to late and not taking advantage of the late foul trouble Anderson got into! What a great squad of young ladies at Anderson. My daughter said "Dad they just kept coming off the bench and everyone could play!" Good Luck at S-16! You'll represent the 8th well! Too the Lady Pioneers, Nikki BROWN-PONZER-PACE, what is there to say? You are all great ladies and will lead great lives beyond HS! Congrats to Nikki BROWN-PONZER-WAINSCOTT on your selection to the All-8th Region Tour. Team. I doubt there are three combined players in NKY that logged the combined minutes on the floor that you did! Unreal! :notworthy:
ColonelMike Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Not a huge surprise. Anderson has impressed me all year, but like many, I wondered if their extreme youth - two 8th graders start, and there's only one senior on the team - would finally betray them in a tight situation in the region title game. There were no tense moments early on, as Anderson raced to a 16-4 lead after one quarter. But SK rallied to pull to within 21-19 at the half, and the "tense moment" finally arrived late in the third as SK pulled to within a point at 35-34. It was 36-31 after three. But, AC immediately regrouped and regained command, and was pulling away at the end. SK never led. Kudos to a game SK team; they never gave up and stayed in contention until the fourth quarter. With the rest of the team struggling, Wainscott pretty much carried them on her back with 24 points on a night when Anderson completely shut down the inside game (6 combined points for Pace/Brown/Blevins on combined 3 of 12 shooting), and held SK to 20% shooting from the field (12 of 60 overall and 4 of 22 beyond the arc). Wainscott hit her last 10 free throws and did a great job of getting to the line...but the rest of the team was 2 of 6 at the charity stripe. Anderson's height really caused problems at every position. Anderson's lone senior, Kara Yeaste was the tourney MVP, and 6'1" sophomore center Sydni Brown and 5'9" 8th grader Eriel McKee joined her on the all-tourney team. For SK, Wainscott, Ponzer, and Brown made the all-tourney team. Watch out: Anderson started one senior, one junior, one sophomore and two 8th graders tonight, and brought only underclassmen off the bench, including a 7th grader. The region has been put on notice that this AC team will be a force for the next couple of years. Right now, AC has to be the "pre-pre-season" favorite in 2010-11...although Walton-Verona will also return a veteran squad next year, as will South Oldham, two other teams that will likely be among next year's premier 8th region teams...

McDowell wasn't pulled out immediately after getting whistled for her fourth, would have been a great time to attack her. Brown was able to stay on the floor with four fouls, and she was a force down the stretch, blocking more than a few shots. Everytime Wainscott was able to get past her defender Brown was there to challenge the shot. I've only watched two SK games since I graduated, and I have to say I came away very impressed with Wainscott. She's a very good ball handler with both hands, and her crossover and ability to effectively go left is enough to make me envious of her game. She's also nails from the stripe.

ColonelMike Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Great job as always, CM. Thanks; this game was a lot of fun to watch, and my hat's off to both teams. Anderson was clearly the better team tonight, but SK simply wouldn't fold, and they gave ground only grudgingly throughout. Anderson's defense simply made it very difficult to shoot the basketball. It was a hard-fought game, well-officiated (IMO, and I haven't been real enthused with the officiating until tonight) and both teams should have left the court with their heads held high! For Anderson, this is their THIRD regional championship. The Lady Cats won the first-ever Region 8 title in 1975, and again in 1978. It was the third year in a row AC had made the final, having lost to SK the last two seasons. For SK, also a pretty neat accomplishment: This was their fourth straight year in the title game.
NEERFAN Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Without keeping stats, I knew SK had to shoot under 30%, but knowing they shot 20% is almost mind numbing. What did the Bearcats shoot from the field and line?

ebrown5606 Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 Over the next 3 seasons this AC team could be the first real shot at a state champion coming from the 8th. That young and that good, if it gets better each year, I'm just thinking out loud! Haven't seen a team that takes so little time to set and shoot!
magicfan217 Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 does anybody have the complete list of 8th region all tournament girls?
magicfan217 Posted March 7, 2010 Posted March 7, 2010 I know Cann/Yeaste/Brown/Mckee from AC as well as Ponzer/Brown/Wainscott....anybody have the others?
