He's analogizing about the federal budget by relating it to personal financial advice that would be considered prudent to anyone: you don't gamble if you don't have enough money, you don't buy a boat if you don't have enough money, etc. and similarly the government shouldn't be spending money on frivolous things when it doesn't have enough money. He's not preaching to anyone, but relating an analogy about policy. That this has gotten as far as it has or to suggest that this somehow negatively affects Las Vegas is lunacy and, I think, is indicative of how miserable political discourse has become. You don't take over a car company if you don't have the money.

If I want to go visit NKY or Evansville, for instance, it's darned near a nightmare to coordinate to use the car. I usually wind up renting a car. I've explored Greyhound. But, here's the nightmare there. If I want to go to Evansville on a Greyhound, I have to take a Greyhound from Louisville to Memphis, then transfer to a Greyhound that goes up the western part of Kentucky to Evansville. It's over 12 hours! And it's a 2 hour drive! Crazy! Not to mention the ticket is over $400! Give me a rail option, and I might actually visit some of my NKY friends pretty frequently.

I've been to Europe several times, and love the train and subway systems that exist there. I would love to see it here, but just don't see it working here. We rejected trains years and years ago. We are a car culture. We only ride buses and trains when we absolutely have to, they are inefficient compared to the freedom we have in our cars. There's no way you get private sector put money in it. They don't believe they can recoup their cost. It's a niche market. There are a limited amount of people who would use it. So the only way to do it is have the government do it. To make them efficient would require such an incredible outlay of money, there's noway we could afford it. It would cost millions upon millions of dollars. Money that most voters would concider to be a waste of tax payer dollars. Especially in light of today of the current fiscal situation.
February 5, 201016 yr So, you agree with Obama's sentiment? I don't agree with the way he said it. It seems to me too often his speeches are attempts to find a villain. Big business, insurance companies, rich people... In this case, the people of Vegas feel they are being made out to be a villain, and IMO rightfully so. I agree with being fiscally responsible. I wish he practiced his analogy.
