Conner avenges an 11 point loss from a couple of weeks ago. What or who was the difference in the game last night?

Sophomores Taulbee and Ray (according to the Enquirer). Conner has a great future in front of them!

Conner pressured and pushed the pace. Conner wore HHS down IMO. HHS doesn't have any depth. When I say wore them down it was as much mental as physical, Conner never stopped going at them.

With Sr Hope Cutter going down at the beginning of the 3rd qtr Highlands sorta loss their confidence on the floor. Hope is not a scoring phenom but her presence on the floor and knowledge of the game is unmatched. Highlands goes from fielding three Srs, Jr and Frosh to various inexperienced sets to try and hang on. The rest of the game Highlands relies on four different Frosh to help fill in the voids during the second half with 3 Frosh on the floor at one point in time. So, yes, Conner mentally wore down the Birds, but certainly not physically. And yes, the future looks very bright for the Birds as well. Go Birds. 20n10

Too bad for Allen and Towles we are now talking about the future. Sheer travesty if they don't win a region.

No one here is looking into the future or looking past this season and I dont think I was referring to the future in general or regards to this season. I was really referring to a Conner poster who is talking about their future. This team, even with the young girls playin are very very capable of winning the region. It just depends on which team shows up on which night. I have seen them this yr look unbeatable to simply not good. These losses they have been taken will perhaps make other teams look past HHS. That could be a very bad thing, imo. Go Birds. 20n10

Sorry if I took your post the wrong way. You're in for a long day:thumb:

A very highly regarded girls coach once told me the key is to have 3 "players" per class. By this he meant he wanted 3 good to very good players soph-senior class and round out the program with "role" players and a frosh or two. He felt if he could achieve this, his program would be competitive year in and year out. Highlands seems to have a huge void with 3Srs, 1 Jr, and no sophs making an impact.

Trust me, no 9th Region team is ever going to look past Highlands. We have admired Allen and Towles as long as you have.

Agree with paNDA. No 9th region team will look past Highlands. It looks like this game was a typical "On any given night" 9th region Girl's game. I also believe that Highlands will be tough for future years. They have some very good freshmen.

I think the formula you are suggesting is the key. HHS girls program has a history of playing kids up several years and leaving voids in the middle.

The biggest example of this is this years Jr. class. I am not close enough to the program to know the reasons the girls are not still in the program, but I do know that when this group played in middle school they were very talented. Breslin, Hempfling, and Theisen were very good young players. There were others. The Soph class was not a very talented or committed group, but 1 or 2 could have filled a role if they still were playing.

IMO, when you constantly move girls up you eliminate the role players that could help when they mature to Juniors and Seniors. Most freshmen girls are not ready to compete with girls 3 and 4 years older. I know the frosh at HHS are a talented group, but they would benefit from being placed on the frosh or JV team and allowed to mature.

IMO, a turning point of the game was with Conner down by 6 points, Towles was caught throwing an elbow to the face of Gilbreath. She was assessed a technical foul and Conner made the three throws. They got possession and scored, then had a stop and scored again to tie the game.

Conner's defense was much better than in the first game. Although Allen scored 16 or so points she was hounded all night by Beasley who had several blocked shots on her. Allen did have several steals in the game and converted on several.

Sorry to see Cutter go down with an ankle injury. Her presence would have helped Highlands.
