The 100 ppm of CO2 added to the atmosphere since the start of the industrial revolution has caused an average increase in worldwide plant growth of 12 percent and of 18 percent for trees.
January 21, 201016 yr Author CO2 is actually the "food" that sustains essentially all plants on the face of the earth, as well as those in the sea. And the more CO2 they "eat" (absorb from the air or water), the bigger and better they grow.

January 21, 201016 yr I realize I am old as dirt, but we learned most of this is stuff in science class between grade school and high school. I don't know what kids are learning today... but I doubt it's free from current political agenda. It also supports my personal belief that God "designed" this earth to adapt, adjust and keep things in balance. There clearly needs to be a certain amount of CO2 in the air... too much, the atmosphere retains more heat, plants grow bigger and faster and absorb more CO2 from the air to replace it with the oxygen we need... too little, the atmosphere retains less heat, plants don't grow so well, absorbing less CO2 allowing more CO2 to accumulate. There are other factors to be certain, but this essentially helps explain past warm and cold cycles. God's genius is unfathomable. Our silliness is all too evident. RTS, I think what you have posted reflects a basic misunderstanding of what a pollutant is. At its most basic definition, a pollutant is a resource out of place. Carbon dioxide is absolutly necessary to maintain the earth's life cycle. It is necessary to provide a mechanism to carry the sun's energy to our bodies. Just don't try to live on an atmosphere of pure carbon dioxide. The same is true of nearly anything you can think of. Even the most toxic metyl-ethyl terrible may have a very important use. Radioactive substances can kill or they can provide energy. Simple corn can be a great food source. Put too much of it in a creek and the fish in the creek will die. Potasium is necessary to regulate heart beat. In high enough dosage it will stop the heart. Too much of the debate on global climate change seems to be populated on both sides with people who don't have even a basic understanding of science, the carbon cycle, long term weather patterns, the insignificance of anecdotal evidence or even simple logic. I think that a simple declaration that carbon dioxide is not a pollutant reflects that lack of understanding. Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant in the proper location at the proper concentration. Change the location and the concentration and it is not only a pollutant, it can be a deadly pollutant.

You make some valid points, and I don't mean to quibble, but following your logic (which is absolutely accurate) H2O could be considered a pollutant. A person can actually die from ingesting too much water in too short a timeframe. We're not talking about drowning in it... but simply drinking too much of it. From Wikipedia: "Water can be considered a poison when super-concentrated just like any other substance." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication Clearly, life as we know it would be impossible without adequate levels/amounts of H2O and CO2, just as too much of either can make things dicey.
