Why was this term abandoned in favor of "long jump?"

 

I'm always reminded of it when watching the "M*A*S*H" movie, where during the football game, the disoriented Superbug character says, "I'm in the broad jump, coach!"

I thought that these were two different events. I thought that the broad jump was done while standing still as opposed to the long jump in which the participate gets a running start prior to the jump.

That is what I was thinking.

Then again, other links call the long jump "the running broad jump."

 

So, I guess my next question would be why is the broad jump no longer an event in track and field?

Broads didn't like being jumped over for sport???

My recollection is that there used to be a running broad jump and a standing broad jump. Running broad jump was a track and field event, standing broad jump was not. At least, not when I was in school.

 

My recollection is also that all running events were in yards and not meters.
