Six platinum (2 double) I believe and 4 gold. They are deserving of a spot in the Hall,but,sadly I agree with Alabama that they will never get in.

 

Grand Funk absolutely should be there. But I hate that you both are probably right and they will have a hard time the longer it goes.

Gimmick or not, 30 yrs in the business a legions of followers should get them in.

 

GWAR(spelling) has a gimmick and they should and probably will never get in the HOF.

 

GWAR, while I respect what they've done as far as staying power, has had limited impact on the commercial mainstream, either directly or indirectly, and that is a must-have trait for bands/artists who are rock hall-caliber/worthy. KISS, as was mentioned before, changed the way live music was received/perceived and has had a lasting influence on scores of bands. I'm not aware of anyone, when asked who their biggest musical influence is, who responded "GWAR."

 

For the record, I think both ABBA and KISS are more than worthy as inductees. It is downright shameful that KISS isn't a "first-ballot" selection.

Grand Funk Railroad, sold out Shea Stadium quicker than The Beatles. Has several Gold/Platinum Albums. Never will get in and there are thousands of fans who protest this every year.

 

Closer To Home, that song alone should do it.

I think anyone who judges a musician solely on "technical ability" or how complex their musical abilities are doesn't really get it to begin with.

 

Tom Petty said it best back in the mid 70's when he and his guitarist were discussing one of their early songs. Guitarist Mike Campbell was fretting about not being able to "capture" a certain complicated riff/solo in a song. Tom just said, "Hey, it's rock n roll. It's not supposed to be good."

 

Pretty much says it all if you think about it.

I just don't see ABBA as rock and roll. If it were just a 'Music Hall of Fame', they would HAVE to be a first ballot / no doubter.

I could be wrong but wasn't Rock and Roll like a term for being "different" sort of, I was at the RNRHOF last January, and I thought that's what it said in a write up on Alan Freed, the famous Radio DJ. I checked his Wikipedia(I know...I know) and when he described Rock and Roll I got this.... "Rock and Roll" is a river of music that has absorbed many streams: rhythm and blues, jazz, rag time, cowboy songs, country songs, folk songs. All have contributed to the big beat"

Mind you, he's describing rock'n'roll as it looked in the '50s, but he's right. It's just that more streams flow through it now.

See, you're approaching it the way a radio programmer would: looking to fit everything into a nice, neat, little pigeonhole or this genre or that genre. I look at rock'n'roll as an all-encompassing umbrella, and that's why I can listen to a gangsta rap record and follow it up with Bluegrass gospel.

I don't see how they wouldn't be. There really weren't too many other bands doing what they did during their heyday. At least, none that achieved the mainstream appeal The Police did.
