Turnovers were key for visiting Newport Central Catholic in the Thoroughbreds' 54-49 upset of host Sacred Heart Saturday in girls' high school basketball.

 

Sacred Heart (2-1), ranked No. 4 in The Courier-Journal's preseason coaches' poll, committed 26 turnovers. Unranked Newport Catholic (2-1) scored 26 of its points off those turnovers.

 

NewCath shot just 29.6 percent (16 of 54) from the floor but made 18 of 33 free throws. Hannah Thiem led NewCath with 22 points, and was 10 of 17 from the line.

 

Morgan Clemons and Maddie Peabody had 10 points apiece and Mary Gordon Stough seven points and 14 rebounds for the Valkyries

SHA has lost two of their best players for the season. They still have good talent to make this season successful. Give them a little time to gel with changes that have had to make and they will be ok.

Great win for the Breds. SHA is a very good team, even without 2 of their starters. Best of luck to both teams!:clap:

From the linescore provided, I notice two key names missing, Autumn Miller and Jackie Hafele. I know Autumn suffered an injury but didn't know it was serious enough to keep her out all season. If (and I'm not sure) Hafele is also out, this would be more than just two starters missing. Both are top players in the region and Miller is often listed as one of the top players in the state, running their offense.

 

Although their current ranking will likely drop, I have no doubt that what TonyDanza stated is true. With Coach Moir's expertise, the Valkyries will gel and be able to compete with anybody. Playing them now will be a much different experience than playing them later in the season/post-season.

I appreciate NCC and recognize it and others (Boone Co., Ryle, Notre Dame, etc.) as quality teams in Northern KY. Please don't assume a Louisville bias just because one is from a certain area.

 

If any team (including Sacred Heart or NCC) lost two of its first team all-region players/leading scorers, I think it should be noted as a factor in the game, not an excuse. I'm sure other N. KY posters would agree.

I would certainly agree. I read what was posted as simply a factual explanation of why Sacred Heart was far from full strength. Most teams I've seen would be devastatingly effected by the loss of their two top players.

What happened to Jackie Hafele? What a shame! She has a great future in soccer ahead of her. Hopefully, her injury is not serious. Not slighting the Miller girl, hopefully she will be alright as well.
