Blowout City

I understand teams playing tough non-district opponents and getting beat, but I do not believe losing teams should generally be in the playoffs.

Suggestions for improving quality of playoffs:

1. top 4 in each region qualify, forget districts

2. top 6 in each region, forget districts, or top 3 in each district,(include byes for 1 & 2 seeds and play 3v6 and 4v5 provides better round 1 matchups, more lower seeds with chance to advance

3. realign to force more district/regional games during the season placing more emphasis on playoff qualifying games (no 4-5 team districts, make them all 6-7 teams)

4. Minimum number of wins to qualify (like college bowl games)

I take it you're not a fan of KY HS basketball in its current setup...

Actually basketball is fair because everyone makes it. In football not everyone does, only 192 out of about 220. Many who don't qualify have better W/L records than those who qualify. Also, basketball is a different animal because you can play several games in a week while only 1 football game per week. You must plan for the time in weeks for football, not days for basketball.

I'm also comparing the KY playoffs to OH where they use the Harbin point system that many in KY decry. One may leave good teams out, while the other lets bad teams in.

I'd always prefer to let bad teams in over keeping good teams out.

That is not going to stop the first round blowout games. That is what has people's shorts in a bunch, right?

I think more people have a problem with a 1-9 or 0-10 making the playoffs because theres only 4 teams in the district. I would also like to see it go back to 4 classes and keep the format the same. At least then, a 4 seed has knocked off 2 or 3 other teams in there district. Sure, there will be blowouts, because in some cases, certain teams are just that much better(Ft Campbell, for example), but, I do think it would cut down on them. I also think 6 state champions are too much. I remember the year Belfry won 3a and Ft Campbell won 2a. These schools have basically the same # of students, with approx 350 boys for a 4 yr average. Russell was about the same the yr they won it too. No reason for these teams to play in different classes, imo...

Didn't said team already have 10 opportunities?

One shot at the playoffs will not hurt you anybody else.:ohbrother:

well then they should earn that chacne in the district games, not play like ..... and then decide, it is the playoffs so it is time to play for real. They can still count on those upsets in the regular season until they make it to the playoffs. They need to EARN playoff spots, not just give them to everyone in the state.

A lot of teams improve over the course of a season, some get better some get worse. A bad team can lose the first 6 games, but won the last 4 because they got better over the spend of the season and is ready to make a few upsets in the playoffs and make that run that everybody would remember because they improved and got better, IMO that is what makes the playoffs so fun and high school football over all. All a team like that needs is a chance to make it happen, it is a crime to take that away form the them and any team who wants that shot.

None of this hurts me, it's sports. It does make a fallacy of "making" the playoffs though.

As we get ready for round 2, how many games are going to be blowouts?

On paper at least, I would say 75% or more of the games look like interesting, competitive matchups. The very upper echeolon of teams will still have blowout games, but that would be true for those teams in round 2 under almost any proposed system. I still say the current system works just fine because it gives almost every team in the state an opportunity in the playoffs, like the kids get in every other sport. I will take one round of many games being blowouts to provide that opportnuity.

May I elect you to the KHSAA?

I would also favor reducing the six classes down to 4 or at most 5.
