Society says she should go out and get a job and not go on welfare. She agrees. However, as she clearly stated, many jobs today require phone interviews. You and your friends who pulled themselves up by the britches scoff at her needing a helping hand from the govt and say she shouldn't get a free 68-minute-for-one-month phone so she can try to find a job. You then scoff even more when she has to go on welfare to support her family because a potential employer couldn't contact her.

The politicians having been telling them for years that they are owed something so that they would vote for them. And we are too stupid enough to not see it for what a lie it is. What else do you think they would believe?

It's wonderful that you made it through college on your own and never took anything from anyone -- Seriously... But would you not have appreciated just a little bit of help? You don't need the world given to you, but just a helping hand here and there can go a long way.

 

My stepfather was in an accident at work around the same time that he was also in a car accident. He has since been left unable to work any longer. Workers' compensation doctors and lawyers say that his injuries were the result of his car accident and stopped paying him after a short while. The doctors and lawyers involved in the car accident case argue that his injuries were the result of the work accident, so that one is still hung up in trial... It has been a major catch-22. Thankfully, they've been able to receive government assistance to get food stamps among other programs. They also get the Lifeline credit on the home phone which helps with the constant scheduling of doctors and lawyers while this mess is straightened out. I am financially giving everything I can so they can continue supporting my 2 young brothers (14 and 2) while continuing to feed themselves. I'm just glad that they get some assistance, because otherwise they may not be able to eat and keep the roof over their heads.

 

Should we stop donating our clothes to charity because those who need them should work to buy them new? Stop having toy drives for children because unfortunately their parents can't afford them so they shouldn't have any opportunities to play? Toys aren't necessities, right?

 

What sickens me is when people scoff at any opportunity to help someone else, simply because that opportunity was not present for them. Someone getting 68 minutes on a cell phone per month does not hurt me in the slightest, and I doubt it does you either.

As a taxpayer, its worth it to me to give this limited-use limited-time phone to someone. Its no different than paying for re-training or any sort of training. Its a short-term low-cost investment you and I make so that these people have access to look for jobs and to respond and be available OR to use in case of emergencies.

I guarantee you that most Americans would love to help the single mom trying to get a job and better the lives of her children and herself. I would also guarantee you that most Americans would love to help a person injured at work that can no longer earn wages. I have longed held the position that those who need help should get it.

But this country is drug down because too many think that government providing them a way of life is what they want.

Well, since I did not imply that RM was stupid, I guess the can't read or comprehend is a relevant question.

No matter what you do, there will be people that take advantage of it... Unfortunately, that's just reality. As much as I hate that fact, (and believe me, I hate it), it's something I can make myself live with to know that there are others who are deserving that are receiving help they would not have before.

 

I'm with you to a point. The problem is for decades the American dream was to get a good job and support a family. There are more and more Americans being raised w/ their hands out. Why work if you don't have to if you were raised that having your hand out isn't so bad? When/where does it end?

The thread is talking specifically about cell phones being given out. When talking about the cell phones you said "how many people are going to use it specifically for that purpose?"

 

So, asking what rules and conditions are on these free phones seems like a fair question. So , again, what is your understanding of the conditions placed upon those using these phones?
