Do you think that schools should have rules to prevent young parents from playing sports?

No.

That might have lawsuit written all over it.

So if the theory behind poor grades and not playing is that students with poor grades should be home studying to improve their grades instead of at practices and games, then should teen parents be home taking care of their child?

I see where you’re going, but the same could be said about parents who work or the students even attending school at all if they have a child at home.

I think its a fair question.

 

Often times the child's baby will be watched by a family member so the baby is not being neglected. Banning a child from athletics could be viewed as a punishment and I'm not sure that's the message we want to send. So, I'd say that if they can swing it they can play.

This is a very slippery slope if schools are given the authority to restrict extracurricular activities based on a student’s family or living situation.

Finding a quality person to take care of the child when they are at their athletic endeavours . The child should come first and not be neglected .

I think the difference would be that it is important to have an education to be employable as an adult and it is important to have a job to be able to support a family. It is not important or necessary when it comes to your responsibilities as a parent to play football or basketball in high school.

 

Wouldn't having a job to support your child be a responsibility? I could see having an after school job and your child being cared for by family while you work. Or how about baby-daddy working after school while baby mama actually cares for the child instead of someone else in the family having to be responsible for their child.

The academic minimums for eligibility in sports are in place to make sure students are focused on their primary reason for attending school. The two are interrelated because they are both under the authority of the school.

 

Restricting student participation because he or she is a parent would legally be discrimination IMO. I’m not saying that teen parents should all be handing off their newborns so they can go play basketball, but I am saying it is not under the school’s authority to restrict their participation based on being a parent.
