District 7 teams (District Records in Parenthesis)

Pulaski County (3-0)

Southwestern (3-1)

South Laurel (1-2)

Mercer County (1-2)

Lincoln County (0-3)

Games remaining:

Mercer County at Pulaski County

Lincoln County at South Laurel

Pulaski has clinched #1 seed.

Southwestern has clinched #2 seed

If South wins and Mercer loses, South is 4rd and Mercer is 4th

If South loses and Mercer loses, Lincoln is 3rd and South is 4th

If South wins and Mercer wins, South is 3rd and Mercer is 4th

If South loses and Mercer wins, Mercer is 3rd and Lincoln is 4th

District 8 teams (District Record in parenthesis)

Letcher County Central (3-1)

Harlan County (3-1)

Whitley County (3-1)

Perry County Central (2-2)

North Laurel (1-3)

Clay County (0-4)

Games Remaining:

North Laurel at Letcher County Central

Harlan County at Clay County

Whitley County at Perry County Central

Letcher Central's loss was to Harlan County

Harlan County's loss was to Whitley County

Whitley County's loss was to Letcher County Central

How likely is it that one of those three gets a loss this week? If not, how does the 3-way tie-breaker shake out for them?

It appears that Perry County Central gets the 4th spot. Clay County and North Laurel appear to be mathematically eliminated (if NL and PCC both end up 2-3, PCC get the head-to-head tie-breaker).

Let's hear opinions on who wins each district and then the region. In my opinion, District 8 is better this year than District 7. Could we see a District 8 sweep of the first round?

I just caught my error too late to edit.

If South wins and Mercer loses, South is 3rd and Mercer is 4th.

If South loses and Mercer loses, Lincoln and South will be 3rd and 4th but the position will be determined by the 3 way tiebreaker. I think South gets it on wins by non-common opponents. Either way, Mercer is out in this scenario because they have no non-common wins and get no points in a three way tie-breaker.

I posted in the Lincoln County/Mercer County final score thread that District 8 might sweep District 7 in the playoffs. 1st & Goal said that he didn't think so.

I am not saying it WILL happen, I am saying it COULD happen. Here's why:

District 7 champion Pulaski County lost the season opener to North Laurel 36-33. North Laurel is probably going to finish 5th in the 6th team District 8.

South Laurel in District 7, lost to District 8's North Laurel 7-6 and Letcher County Central 34-6.

On the other hand Southwestern beat Harlan County 35-8 in the Ray Correll Bowl.

So, in four head-to-head games, District 8 won 3 of the 4.

My opinion could be wrong, but I think District 8 is tougher, especially top to bottom. District 7 is top heavy with Pulaski and Southwestern and, even though they both get first round home games, they will certainly be challenged by the 3rd or 4th place team from District 8.

They may be from top to bottom-but SWP beat Harlan 35-8 in week 2 and Pulaski just beat SWP 16-6. Whitley and LCC have the best chance in my opinion.

Its my understanding that if Lincoln wins and Mercer loses it would be Lincoln 3rd and South 4th due to head to head and Mercer is out because due to 3 whay tie and 0 pts. Now if Mercer and South Laurel win its South Laurel then Mercer 4th, but if Mercer and Lincoln win its Mercer then Lincoln 4th.

The way the teams are playing right now, ... I think the only team from district 7 that could win the region is Pulaski. On the other hand, I think any of the top 4 from district 8 could win it.

I would put my money on Whitley or LCC. But don't count out Harlan who seem to have turned the corner and are playing solid defense. Their O line is really starting to take over games.

But Harlan County only beat North Laurel in 2OT's and North Laurel beat Pulaski County.

Bottom line is that you cannot judge teams based on common opponents because in high school it is about head to head matchups, some teams just match up better against differing teams.

As for Harlan County, they are not the same team that SWP played in week two, for starters it was HC's 1st game and SWP's 2nd. SWP dominated on big plays for the win and lastly the lineup for Harlan County is completely different offensively and defensively. I feel a sweep will be almost certain.

North Laurel will likely be 6-4 or 5-5 and not make the playoffs having beat 5 playoff teams and playing a schedule with 8 teams with a winning record. The upsetting thing for North Laurel this season is they have lost 3 district games and two of them by a combined 7 points. North Laurel has played 4 bad quarters this season both 3rd and 4th quarters in the Corbin and Whitley County games, other than that they have taken care of business and cannot make the playoffs, it is a very tough district.

You also thought SW would beat Pulaski by 2 tds. The 7th will not be swept. North would get beat by Pulaski and SW by 3 tds this time of year. But we will never know since North is not in playoffs.:D

It wasn't like PC destroyed SWP, it was a 10 point game. I'll take head to head victory since NL already beat Pulaski County and immediatley spoiled thier perfect season they thought they were going to have this year, but then again there was also Barren County.

North would have been a contender to win District 7....they are going to be 5th in District 8.

Don't think so. 3rd maybe.

They beat the District 7 champion. This year. Head-to-head.

Dist 7 3rd and 4th:

IF Lincoln beats SL and Mercer loses to PC: LC-MC-SL would all be 1-3 in district. Then the 3 way tie will be determined by the tie breaker point system.

Mercer will have 0 quality points.

SL has one out of district win vs williamsburg, who is 4-5 giving SL 4 points(and play @ Pinville). Max 5 qps.

Lincoln Co has 1 out of district win over 1-7 madison southern giving Lincoln 1 quality point with 2 games to play (vs Knox Cen & estill co). Max 3 qps.

So according to my understanding the 3rd spot will be determined by the pts and IF the above scenerio plays out SL will finish 3rd.

Then...the 4th spot will go back to head to head play in which Mercer beat Lincoln. Mercer would be in.

Is this incorrect?

That is incorrect. See the rule posted below. Highest point total from tie-breaker gets the tied-for spot and then the points are used for remaining spots. See 3(b)(iv) below. If South and Mercer both lose, Lincoln County would get 4th behind South Laurel. Mercer still hold the key to their own fate. If they beat Pulaski County, they are in no matter what Lincoln County and South Laurel do. In fact, if Mercer and Lincoln both win, South Laurel is out.

District CHAMPION

1) Class 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5Aand 6A will be divided into two semistates

with four regions in each semi-state, and those four

regions having two districts in each region.

2) To be eligible to be champion, runner-up, third place or fourth

place position of a district, a team shall play all other teams

assigned to their district.

3) The champion, runner-up, third place or fourth place position in

each district shall be determined by the win-loss record based

upon the games played against opponents in the district. Only

games scheduled by contract prior to the fi rst legal playing date

and played before the fi rst weekend of the state playoffs shall

be used in determining a district winner or runner-up.

a) TIE-BREAKER (two teams). In the case of a tie for the

champion, runner-up, third place or fourth place position

between two teams based upon the win-loss record, the team

that won the game contested between the two tied teams

shall be declared the winner.

b) TIE-BREAKER (more than two teams). Should three or more

teams tie for the a district position based upon the win-loss

record, the position shall be determined by the following:

i) If one of the teams has defeated each of the other teams

tied in games contested between them, that team shall be

declared to hold the highest position, and the winner of the

game between the remaining teams (if less than four) shall

be declared the second highest position. In the event of

more than three teams being tied, where one has defeated

each of the tied teams, that team shall be declared the

highest position, and the tie-breaking procedure shall be

re-applied for the remaining tied teams.

ii) If the tie remains, each team tied for the position shall

receive one point for each game won by any four of their

defeated opponents in all games, except for the games

played between any two of the tied teams. All games played

shall be counted in applying the tie-breaking procedure,

including out of state games, with the exception that a

defeated school may be counted only once in the procedure

regardless of the number of games played against that

particular school. Teams awarded forfeit victories (whether

or not a forfeit fee is paid) may count the defeated opponents

of the forfeiting team, provided the game was not replaced

on the schedule.

iii) If the tie remains after application of provision (ii), an

additional defeated opponent’s wins will be added to the

point total for each team until the tie is broken and the

winner of the tied position declared, or until all games are

exhausted.

iv) If the tie for the position involves only three teams, and the

application of (ii) and (iii) results in one team being declared

the winner of the tied position based on point totals, the

highest point total from the application of (ii) and (iii)

between the two remaining tied teams shall be declared to

hold the next position.

v) If the tie for the championship involves more than three

teams, and the application of (ii) and (iii) results in one

team being declared the winner of the tied position based

on point totals, the procedure shall then be re-applied to

determine the next position.

vi) If the tie for the position involves more than three teams,

and the application of (ii) and (iii) results in two teams

remaining tied for the position based on points, the head

to head game played between them shall break the tie, and

head to head competition will break any remaining ties.

viii) If a tie results after application of all provisions of the

above plan, the tie shall be broken by the Board of Control.

This one is too crazy for me to figure out just yet ai will have to wait until after Friday's games.
