If I had really known about it prior it would have been a very sound purchase. My wife and I were in the market to purchase Tim a regular Schutt Helmet anyhow.

 

It's a great helmet, and the product that ChiefSmoke spoke of sounds fantastic as well.

I believe the other technology they are working on with this helmet is the concussion force detection which will also allow trainers to detect potential brain trauma while the player is on the field with monitoring done from the sidelines as well. That is definately one they must get under control asap. Some kids just refuse to come off the football field when they sustain these types of hits and with some that dont even know that they may have just suffered potential damage. Go Schutt.

Rule 13

I don't disagree with this, but the majority of HS knee injuries seem to be to skilled-position players, not linemen. I wouldn't mind seeing some simple type of knee brace becoming mandatory in HS period. With how much a college scholarship is worth, seems like a good investment at minimal loss of speed. Brandon Roller's (HHS) sure doesn't seem to be slowing him down much!

 

A lot of lineman get rolled up on from the back or side. That is why you see all Division 1 OL wearing them. We have had a ton more of knee injuries to lineman than skill players. I would love to see HS lineman have them. My youngest son had to wear one his whole Senior year and it saved him a few times during the season.

Ashland had 4 linemen go down this year with season/career ending knee injuries. It really makes you sick to your stomach when you see it happen. Knowing the kids it has happened to so well causes it to be so much the worse! Now any time I see a player down no matter who he is I just pray that he isn't injured, what a relief it is to realize that its' just leg cramps or something of the like. I would think knee braces would almost be standard equipment for interior linemen. I have seen some teams D take the knees out from under players as a way to get them out of the play.
