As GT can vouch, I'm far from a supporter of UC. But, Brian Kelly is one of the best defensive minds in college football. Actually, he's just one of the best minds in football on both sides of the field, so they will be fine.

Fresno did nothing to try and spread out UC. They were almost always in a power formation and simply tried to work Matthews for as many touches as he could give them.

 

The plan by BK was to limit the big play which also worked to perfection. The longest run Matthews had was 11 yards and that was in 38 touches. It seemed like he ripped off a 60 yarder every 3 touches against Boise St when they played the numbers and had 8 and 9 in the box.

 

Zero big plays for Fresno St and a UC win. Obviously a bad strategy by BK, and one that should have them ranked in the 22 or so range... :lol:

I wasn't implying that they did. Remember those zone concepts haven't always been used in the spread. For instance, Shanahan and the Broncos built a rushing dynasty off of the zone and they weren't a spread team. From the tape I have on Fresno, I wouldn't have said they were a traditional spread team.

 

GT was was Fresno's YPC in thier game vs. UC? I think that would better tell the tale for UC on the day. Would you say that UC's defensive line handled their own? Like I said I didn't see much but the highlights. If they handled those two things along with limiting the big play, I'd say they played a pretty good defensive game. Fresno is no push over, they gave Boise all they wanted as well.

For the bolded, that is pretty impressive. He must have averaged over 10per carry against Boise.

 

Fresno is a quality team, not an elite team, but they are no pushover. Like I said, UC's defense will continue to get better. Kelly's track record speaks for itself. I think with the type of style Fresno plays it will only benefit UC. They'll see some similar stuff in the Big East, though some will use a little different "window dressing".

In all my years of football, I have never heard of secondary injuries hurting the run defense. If they were in cover 2 all day that left 7 that could be in the box, they would've had the advantage.

I am very aware of Bob Sanders, the Colts defense is made to stop the pass more so than the run.....been that way for awhile.

What does it matter what their defense is geared to stop? When Sanders is out the run defense is signifcantly worse. He needs to be in the lineup for teams to even have to pass against Indy.
