Moss officially at Boone County

It is official, sophomore basketball star Sydney Moss will be playing for Boone County.

 

I spoke with Boone County coach Nell Fookes during the Scott County/Boone County football game Friday and she confirmed that Moss' paperwork from the Kentucky High School Athletic Association came in last week.

 

Moss, who has gained national media attention because her father is NFL star Randy Moss, is a great basketball player in her own right.

 

She started as a seventh grader for Heritage, before transferring to Ryle to start as eighth grader. Last season, she didn't play much at Ryle for coach Patti Oliverio, for undisclosed reasons. Ironically, Oliverio coached under Fookes at Boone County and at Eastern Kentucky University.

 

The addition helps Fookes who lost star point guard Jacy Bradley to graduation. Bradley is currently getting ready to play basketball at Saint Louis University of the Atlantic 10.

From what I understand, the family has not moved out of the Ryle School District.

Why wouldn't this student/athlete have to sit out a year after a transfer to Boone?

Anyone here have any reasonable explanation for this ruling?

A young football player at Cooper went to Cooper, Ryle, Boone, Ryle and Copper all in around a year or so. So I just wonder what indeed is going on over at the Boone County Board of Education now days, if indeed the family still lives in the Ryle school district! Indeed strange!

As I have lived in Boone County most of my adult life, and have attended a Board of Education Meeting or two before, I have heard time after time after time of how if you live in a certain area you attend a certain Boone County HS.

 

Now over the years that rule has been strictly enforced but now all of a sudden I am hearing about one young man (via the paper) changing schools and more than just one time also, and now another (via BGP's) a student going from school to school (and if it is true) without moving into the schools district, yes I am questioning what is going on.

 

If the Boone County Board of Education would choose to allow the students to do what the Kenton County Board of Education does in allowing a open enrollment, than I for one would have no problem with it but it seems that only certain kids are being allow to get by the rules enforced upon others and it's just seems strange to me.

Do we predict that Nel will be able to control her and keep her on the team? Nel seems like a no nonsense type of person.

For various reasons there are several students attending schools outside of their district. This one just happens to be high profile so it makes the newspaper.

She better be a lot more mentally tough than she has been in the past. I wish her the best of luck in and out of the classroom because Nell will be on top of both of those areas.

There's a very strict process that the Bd. of Ed. follows that in a few cases enables kids to attend other schools within Boone. I commend the Bd. of Ed. for doing what's best for the child and their well-being and keeping them within our district. No one will never know the full truth to these cases because they are very private matters. That's whats best for the students.

Absolutely. Heck, we'd give them scholarships.

I don't think the BC BOE is at question here. I think people are questioning the KHSAA. If it's true that she still resides at the same address and participated in varsity basketball at Ryle, how is she immediately eligible at Boone County?

I am interested in learning some of the "academic/social" reasons that a family would choose to move their child from Ryle to Boone.

 

Could you (or anyone else) name a few reasons?
