Highlands 62 Beechwood 7 (JV)

Congrats to Highlands JV!

Highlands’ TEAM playing was outstanding today. Towles brought the leftovers from last night's air attack, highlight of the day was from the one yarder hitting Gall on a midfield pass who skampered the rest of the way for a 99-yard TD reception. When the Birds weren't throwing, the running backs were breaking away with True, Bowling and McGurn having a great day. Chris Carson had some outstanding returns on special teams. The Bird’s DEFENSE was the player of the game the linemen forced Davis, Beechwood’s QB, to throw into the Bird’s zone coverage, resulting in several interceptions, Carter New returned one for a TD.

Well done young men on another win.

Highlands whipped them pretty well. Actually, it started to look like it might turn into a ball game just before the half. Highlands was winning 21-7 and Beechwood was driving for a score to get within a TD. About :40 seconds to go and Highlands intercepted a pass at the 2 yard line. Next play, 98 yard TD pass by Highlands. That was the ball game. It went from possibly 21-14 at half to 28-7 and Beechwood was never in it after that. Not to say Beechwood had any chance but that would have made it interesting a little longer. Too many bodies for Beechwood to hang in there. The size difference in the lines was wide (no pun intended). I doubt Beechwood will ever be able to beat Highlands in a JV game. The depth of talent in a talented 70 man roster just is never going to allow a 1A school like Beechwood compete. Beechwood's best sophomores are needed on the varsity and Highlands sophomores are getting groomed for their senior year. But I still like seeing BW play Highlands because it shows you how much better you need to get, even though you won back to back state championships. The game is going to look very slow and easier to the BW players the rest of the season after watching the Bluebirds fly around the field last night and today.

Why isn't Gall seeing any Varsity playing time if he had four touchdowns last week and a 99-yard touchdown this week?

Because Buten, Drennan, Hogue and Gold are ahead of him on the depth chart.

Because there is a huge difference between a JV and a Varsity game. Each step up means the other guys are just a bit bigger, stronger and faster.

I am sure that at any HS, if a Coach thought a JV player was better than the Varsity player, that JV player would be getting varsity minutes and even a CovCath fan understand that one! :D

Zing!

Highlands d line had a decent game although gap assignments have been a recent problem it will soon be resolved. This week with a more active rotation helped keep the edge on the line made a huge difference. If the starting nose Cam Robinson can stay low and dominate the gaps running through the middle will be a lost cause. The d ends have been doing a good job in collaboration with the linebackers to keep the ends sealed.

Wow! 62-7. Maybe future varsity "games" between Highlands and Beechwood may not be very exciting to watch. After the 2 year deal is over maybe there will be a 6A or 5A opponent for Highlands to schedule.

Actually, I think Beechwood will be able to give Highlands a solid opponent the next two years, if they keep playing each other two years from now...on the varsity level that is. JV, Beechwood will not be able to compete. It is the difference in the school and roster size that keeps JV from being competitive. As a 1A school, Beechwood has to move its best sophomores straight up to varsity. Highlands' best sophomores are playing JV and just hoping they can even become starters on the varsity field as juniors because of the depth of talent. If Beechwood had all its sophomores on the field for this JV game, you would be surprised at how different the score would look. I am not saying a Beechwood win, but a much, much different game and score.

Most of Beechwoods varsity are underclassman. The games on the varsity level will always be more competitive than the jv.. Beechwood just doesn't have that many kids..

In the past Highlands has also had sophomores playing varsity and not playing JV. Is this not the case anymore?

It looked to me like all Highlands' top sophomores played in this game, including True playing on both sides of the ball. Several of Beechwood's best sophomores did not play because they are logging so many minutes on varsity. I would guess it is rare that a sophomore at Highlands does not play JV. Maybe Collinsworth did not play JV as a sophomore but he is very special. Anyone else you can recall who did not play JV as a sophomore at Highlands?

Bruns didn't play.

Bruns didn't play.

Is he playing varsity? What position? I have heard people talking highly about him but don't know much about him.
