I think most feel South Oldham is the favorite, but after that how do you see the region shaping up? Who are some of the sleeper teams? Breakout players?

I think SIMON, Anderson, Owen, Carroll and Walton will all be good this year also.

Carroll? I mean no disrespect, but I am a bit puzzled as to why you would put them above Henry County or Gallatin County?

I saw most of the teams play this summer. Carroll always is overlooked pre-season.

 

Gallatin or Henry could surprise. If Henry has all their girls back they may be good. Also Spencer may be a factor this year. I think it is wide open.. as usual after the 1st 2 teams. SO and Simon.

I think after SO, the region is WIDE OPEN. Simon is the defending champ, so maybe you have to give them the edge but they were really hit hard by graduation. Anderson has been strong the last several years but was also hit hard by graduation. Owen has a nice bunch returning and could Shelby Co have one more run before they split? Oldham is experienced, but lost their PG and will be playing for yet another new coach. The 8th is full of youth and will be changing throughout the year. Some teams could struggle early, only to find their groove at the end of the season. I personally love the bunch Anderson has coming up. They are super talented. They may still be a year or two away from really competing for the crown in the 8th, but the girls they have coming up might win a few before they leave.

 

 

As far as players go....lots of youth.

I think player of the year honors will come down to Whitfield, Wainscott, and Gayheart. Should be quite a battle!

I think the region will come down to who is playing their best at the end of the year and who remains injury free. On paper to start the year the region may be a little down. Hopefully by the end of the year a team will step up and represent the 8th well at Diddle. The region will be very young and it should make for some interesting games throughout the year. I know the 32nd district should be a lot more interesting this year. Simon still may have the best 3 guard lineup in the region with Stephenson, Wainscott and Ponzer, but Walton is closing the gap - especially on the inside. Williamstown and Grant both play hard and Wilhoit from Williamstown is one of the better players in region. Good luck to everyone.

I think Oldham Co. will be the team to watch this year. The girls love Coach Mullins, he's a run and gun kind of coach. With the experienced of the senior class and a new freshman PG Jessie Leanhart which avg. 20 points and 5 steals a game in MS and 10th grader Melton is a great 3 pt. shooting guard also.

I'm one that is a little skeptical of Oldham this season. I'm not sure that a run and gun style game really fits their personnel well. I think it bodes well for them in the long run, just maybe not next season.

But all of these players were "incomplete" players last season (not surprising, due to their age). The difference will be how much each of these young ladies has improved their games since spring! Some need to learn defense; others need to learn shot selection. Others need to find ways to raise the level of their game when the competition goes up.

Anderson is going to be good again. Their young kids have really improved. They will likely start 2 8th graders, both of whom look ready to play at that level.

 

Anderson looks to have better size then anybody in the region. Their projected starting lineup is big....

 

PG Cann 5-9 8th

SG Yeaste 5-7 12th

SF Mcdowell 5-8 11th

PF Mckee 5-10 8th

C Brown 6-1 10th

 

and they have a 6-0 freshman center coming off the bench....

 

Graduation certainly hit the lady bearcats hard last year, but don't expect to see a big drop in level of play with this young group....

Watch out for Katie Slavey of Walton. She has improved greatly and can really stroke it from the outside.

I have been holding my thoughts on this for awhile so here goes.

 

Anderson has the potential to really make some noise- they are young but a very talented group plus they are taught to be physical. Same with Simon Kenton- again another physical team but they did lose alot to graduation. South Oldham in most eyes seems to be the favorite and their team can go deep with only 2 seniors and 1 junior. Their soph class is loaded with talent

(6 or 7 of them ) and it is hard to tell just how good they will be until they play some games this season. The big plus for them is that any can score so you don't have just one person to focus on to stop. That has not always been the case for them in the past. They too can be physical. The pressure of dealing with the big games may be there only weakness and that showed last year at the region tournament.

 

Since Simon has the most experience in the big games, I will give the nod to them as #1 for now. I do think the team that plays the best man defense will win it all and that is an area where Owen may have a disadvantage with their lack of size.
