Dixie at Ryle tonight, played under real game conditions. Ryle played their starters for three quarters and were up 41-7 when the JV took over. They dominated in every facet of the game. Dixie left their starters in the entire game and ended up tying the score 41-41, beating the Ryle JV team 34-0.

There was some grumbling about Dixie leaving their starters in the entire game, but after thinking about it, it makes sense to me. Frankly, I'm sure their coach was extremely disappointed in their performance the first three quarters and figured he may as well leave them in for as long as possible to try to work out some of the kinks before the score really counts next week. You can certainly question how much they really improved that last quarter since they were going against JV players, but they certainly weren't going to fix anything standing on the sideline.

As for Ryle, their offense looked flat out outstanding. Elliott was very impressive. Not many (any) kids are going to be able to tackle him one on one. If there is a runner in NKY that MUST be gang-tackled, it is him. And teams that stack the line to do that will then be vulnerable to Ryle's passing game. There was one play in particular that Elliott was stopped cold at Dixie's 2 yard line by 3 Dixie defenders and carried them into the endzone. Ryle's passing game was also sharp. Hempel was very accurate and got a couple of nice receptions by Eubanks, Thibadeaux, and Fugate. Ryle's offense is going to score some points this year!

Defense looked absolutely horrific on Dixie's first series, giving up an easy TD, but after that they looked solid. A bit of a "bend but don't break" performance, but they always seemed to come up with a big stop or turnover. There were a few occasions where they struggled to stop the run, but all in all it was a very nice opening performance and the defense should be good enough to keep them in just about any game. Clearly though, right now the offense will carry this team. Hopefully, the defense can avoid injuries, as depth could be an issue. They may have lost their top DB tonight for a little while due to a concussion.

Nice start for Ryle! :thumb:

I am definitely surprised at this one. I know it is a scrimmage but I was expecting a lot out of Dixie this year. I am not surprised at Elliott. He is one tough hombre. Did he put the stiff arm on anyone tonight? He has one of the best one's you will see in a high school players.

Thanks for the recap coop! Sounds like my colonels didn't fair too well last night.

Their offense did okay. Both Wilson and Pike threw the ball fairly well and Klei ran strong. They cruised down the field their first possession, primarily throwing the ball underneath. The receivers got quite a few yards after catch. After that, they were pretty inconsistent, though it's hard to say what they might have been holding back in their offensive scheme knowing they'd see Ryle for real later this year.

The defense has a lot of work to do. Granted, Ryle's offense was clicking from play one, but Dixie's D did nothing really to slow them down. They looked especially weak on run D.

If I had to guess, you are probably going to be in some shootouts this year!

They've struggled with their defense for a few years now. I know they were switching defenses this year because of it. Defensively, they've been a little small, a step slow, and average tacklers.

Offensively, I think they just need someone to step up at the receiver positions. That hurt them last year IMO. Wilson didn't have a go-to guy.

BTW, did Pike see any time with the first string offense at TE or WR? What about defense? I'm curious to see what they do with him this year.

Will Ryle have a tough time against teams that like to pound the ball?

For the most part Ryle did not stop the run - Dixie ran the ball very well last night. Dixie actually stopped themselves on several drives committing untimely turnovers. You have to give Ryle's defense some credit for causing these, particulary an interception in the first half near their own 10 yard line, however, eliminate these turnovers and the score would have been much closer. Ryle clearly was the better team tonight but the lopsided early score was a little misleading. Offensively Ryle looked outstanding and teams are not going to be able to stack the box as Hempel will kill them with the pass.

If that other team has a lot of size on the OL - which one would have to assume they do if they like to pound the ball - it could be a problem, as Ryle is not overly big on the line. But they have good quickness and if there's anyone that could fix a potential defensive problem, it would be Ryle's D coordinator.
