Red Sox acquire Alex Gonzalez

Sox need offense, right?

Luckily the Sox have a GM with a brain, so I think it's a safe bet they don't go near Gonzo....

If Lowrie isn't going to be able to get back to form this season--and it looks like he won't, he's an upgrade over Nick Green. I'm sure he won't cost the Red Sox any kind of decent prospect so I guess it couldn't hurt. Since he's only signed for the rest of the year if he gets injured they really aren't in any worse shape than what they are now at the position.

In a related move, Dusty Baker is in a panic trying to figure out who to hit in the 2 hole.

They got $6M for next year. That's all I need to hear.

They were going to have that savings anyway. They will save from having to pay the rest of that salary for this year, and I believe paying the buyout on his contract. I'm not sure how much that will save them.

Wasn't he under contract for next season?

Note: Never mind. I see that it was a club option.

They owed him $1.5 million for the rest of this year.

So who did the Reds get from this trade?

I'm sure not much.

Minor league shortstop Kris Negron. The 23-year-old Negron, a seventh round pick by the Sox in the 2006 draft, was hitting .263 for Single A Salem.
