Theoldguy Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 The World Cup qualifier match between Mexico and the USA is being play at the strange time of 3pm ct/4pm et this Wednesday afternoon no less. While we in the USA will be working, businesses/stores/factories will shut down and Mexico will come to a halt on Wednesday, and I just wonder how many Mexicans in this Country will miss work on Wednesday. I can only assume that Mexico is using the altitude, smog and heat of the afternoon to their advantage. If you are like me and don't have Digital TV to watch this match (btw, I am not even sure if Insight has this game available) you might Google (justin.TV) as I am sure they will have it to watch on your PC. IMO, this match is much more important to Mexico than to the USA and if the USA can come out of Mexico City with a draw, it will be huge! USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA USA
DragonFire Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Is it even airing on any American channel? I remember Colin Cowherd railing about how it proves his point about not taking soccer seriously when one of the biggest matches of the year for the U.S. is not even televised in English.

None that I know of, but then again with a 3pm central / 4pm eastern start on a Wednesday afternoon, why would even ESPN or FSC want to pay what Mexico would demand to televise this game! I will watch with the sound off and enjoy!
Getslow Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 The Mexican soccer federation loves to stick it to the Americans whenever they can and asking the exorbetant sum of money they always do whenever there's a match being held at Azteca is one of their best tricks. It's also why the match is at four in the afternoon. If there's a country that's been hurt by the U.S.A.'s pretty swift rise to success in CONCACAF over the last 15 years, it's Mexico. This rivalry is intense and it only gets better every year. That said, I'll be absolutely SHOCKED if Mexico doesn't take all three points for this game. I think we'll probably only need to win two of our remaining five to get to the World Cup finals (the home games against El Salvador and Costa Rica and the away game at Trinidad and Tobago should definitely do the trick) so it's not nearly as critical for us as it is for Mexico, who needs to leapfrog Honduras still in order to qualify. We've never won at Estadio Azteca and only drawn once... I don't expect much to change this year.

I remember Colin Cowherd railing about how it proves his point about not taking soccer seriously when one of the biggest matches of the year for the U.S. is not even televised in English. It's airing in English on a relatively tough to find channel called Mun2. It's a Telemundo-branded station with programming aimed at children and young adults. This is the first time a sporting event has ever aired on Mun2. I heard that DirecTV is going to do a free preview of the channel for the day of the match, but I have no links to support that claim.
Irish Cat Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 NBCU Kicks Off Mun2 Free Preview For U.S.-Mexico World Cup Qualifier With mun2 holding its exclusive English-language rights to the Aug. 12 World Cup qualifier between the U.S. and Mexico, NBC Universal will make the bicultural youth service available as a free preview to all its distribution partners that day. The Rumbo Al Mundial World Cup qualifier pits the U.S. for Mexico in Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with the telecast kicking off at 3:55 p.m. (ET) on Aug. 12. The match, which will be simulcast on broadcast brethren Telemundo, marks the first major sporting event mun2, which aims at bicultural Latinos ages 18 to 34, will air. Play-by-play man Phil Schoen and analyst Marcelo Balboa, former defender for the U.S. national team with over 130 caps, will call the action. NBCU officials said mun2, which counts some 31 million subscribers, has already received commitments from distributors for the preview at this stage that will put it before 56 million households. To that end, satellite leaders DirecTV and Dish Network plan to open up the network to their entire subscriber base that day. Officials at the programmer said distributors interested in carrying the network should call their NBCU distribution representative.
Wireman Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 I would be shocked if America won the game, but I will be watching and cheering like crazy. I can't wait. This weekend alone, I have watched Man U./Chelsea, Barcelona/Chivas Guadalajara, Columbus/San Jose, Los Angeles/New England, Real Madrid/D.C. United and Real Madrid against whoever they played Friday night.

This weekend alone, I have watched Man U./Chelsea, Barcelona/Chivas Guadalajara, Columbus/San Jose, Los Angeles/New England, Real Madrid/D.C. Only watched the Toronto FC match for a couple of minutes. I also watched in person two HS soccer matches at Ryle. I have to say I truly enjoyed the HS matches the most. Why? I knew a couple of the kids and I enjoyed watching them have fun.
Wireman Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 That Man U/Chelsea game was pretty wild. I was kind of pulling for Manchester United, but they blew it on penalty kicks.
Wireman Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 ESPN is going to have live pre-game coverage Wednesday afternoon. Then, the game will be on Telemundo, mun2 and some other Mexican station.

It's a psychological battle b/n the two sides. Hopefully the US will keep its cool and come away w/ 1pt. A draw w/ the Mexicans at Azteca would crush the Mexicans and really boost the US qualifying campaign. If the Mexicans get frustrated, you know that they are good for at least 3 yellows. Has Altidore been released by Hull to play?
Getslow Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Has Altidore been released by Hull to play? Has Hull made any indications that they wouldn't? Doesn't seem like it would be a very good way to get your new striker to enjoy his new surroundings.
Getslow Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 ^ Just saw on Sky Sports News that Altidore will be playing for the U.S.A. and that the Hull City front office issued a press release wishing Altidore the best in the match against Mexico. It's two days away and I'm already worked up...

It's two days away and I'm already worked up... That's great. I thought that I had heard on FSC that they may not due to the season opening and his recently being acquired on loan. This is a great opportunity for him to play in the EPL heading into the World Cup. This will prepare him much better than watching on the bench in Spain.

It's two days away and I'm already worked up... Me too. I won't be able to sleep tomorrow night. I literally cannot wait. One good thing the Americans have going for them is argueably the best goalie in the world. Howard can make up for several mistakes a game on his own :thumb:
