August 11, 200917 yr Go watch some of his other fights vs Shogun, Tito, Bonnar etc. He is very emotional and wants to win every fight and sometimes he doesn't handle losing all that well. He usually makes fun of himself after he comes back to earth. Surprisingly he handled the loss to Rashad Evans very well last time he fought. He is a grown man. There is a difference between emotional and acting like a child. To me this was childish. You can't keep doing the wrong thing over and over and act apoligetic after the fact. I prefer cocky and arrogant over someone who can't even shake the man's hand who just kicked his butt!
August 11, 200917 yr A broken jaw would certainly be believable seeing as Silva used it as a punching bag. Seriously though, did that KO while backpedaling remind anyone of the Ice Man. I know I've seen him do that several times. It's an amazing gift. Chuck is who I thought of as well when it happened.
August 11, 200917 yr I'm sorry, I didn't know you were close friends with him. He obviously didn't handle the loss very well, but we haven't even heard his side of the story yet. I'll wait before I call him a "whining baby". Do you have to be close friends with a guy to know that he's a whining baby. He literally cried tears when Jardine put him to sleep, and this time he ran off before the world saw him cry again. What's his story going to be, there was a massive Cpt. Crunch sale at Krogers and the store was closing in 10 minutes? The guy needs to grow up. He's not the greatest fighter in the world, Anderson Silva is.
August 11, 200917 yr I'm new to the sport and several of my friends are huge Forrest fans. I saw nothing from him that makes me believe I should be. Forrest is a solid fighter. He comes to the octagon to win and he won't back down against anyone. That's why you should be a fan. I'm not a huge Forrest fan, but I do like him and I like watching him fight. But, if you're looking for an elite fighter, he's not the guy. I don't understand why people criticize his game plan against Silva. What else was he going to do? Forrest isn't exactly GSP-esque with his takedowns. What are the odds that he could come out and take a fresh Anderson Silva to the mat? Zero. He tried to stay outside and strike, which is what he should have done. The reason he lost is 1) he was way, way out of his league and 2) he has no KO power. His striking doesn't scare anyone, especially not Anderson Silva. So, despite him trying to stay outside and strike, it wouldn't and couldn't work because Silva had nothing to fear from closing the distance. So what if he ate a punch that was no threat to hurt him? It was a bad matchup of styles against possibly the best fighter in MMA history to date. Forrest has virtually no chance in that fight, other than the "lucky punch/anything can happen" line that is alway applicable to an MMA fight. Sure, he could have ran away or laid on his back, but that's not Forrest. He wanted to win and he came to win, even if that means losing decisively. That's why he's a fan favorite, among other reasons.
August 15, 200917 yr Late the to thread as usual, but I just got to watch the event and was thrilled with the results. My favorite, BJ Penn was dominate, Florian did next to no damage, a couple leg kicks and a lot of pushing against the fence. The best in the world, Silva, dominate as well. Made Griffin look silly. How comfortable was the Spider in the fight to literally stick his chin out for Griffin several times. He was in the zone and knew he was far and away the better fighter. For the GSP vs Silva talk I think it would be exciting leading up to it, but I don't like GSP's chances. If Serra can knock out GSP what would Silva do to him? Fighting at your comfortable weight division seems to be huge, as demonstrated by BJ Penn, who owns 155 but struggles when he is against bigger guys like GSP. How would GSP translate to Silva's weight class? If Silva can go to 205 and dominate a former champion like that it makes me wonder if GSP would even have a chance at 185 against him.

That's why he's a fan favorite, among other reasons. I think he's an elite fighter, other wise he wouldn't be at the top of the 205 division in the best MMA promotion in the world. There are very few people who can beat a man like Forrest Griffin in the cage. If by "elite" you mean only the top 1-2 in the division in the world...then no he isn't an "elite" fighter. If you mean "elite" as in very good fighter...yes he is "elite". And yes I think Forrest could have taken Anderson Silva down. A dehydrated Travis Lutter took Silva down, and Dan Henderson took Silva down. Forrest isn't a world class wrestler but not many people are. But Silva isn't the best at defending take downs either.

I have no problem with him crying after the Jardine loss. The effort that goes into training for an MMA fight is unreal. Not many people can do it day in and day out without going crazy but these guys do. Forrest is one of the best conditioned guys in the business so he probably works harder than most. After putting in that effort every day for 8 hours a day, losing isn't going to be easy. I agree that he acted a little silly after the loss to Silva, but to call him a whining baby is exaggerating it a bit IMO.

You can't keep doing the wrong thing over and over and act apoligetic after the fact. I prefer cocky and arrogant over someone who can't even shake the man's hand who just kicked his butt! I understand that, but I have no idea what was going through his head at the time. Some people handle things differently than others and I can't imagine the feeling after getting pummeled in front of millions of people. I've never been there...

Silva had minor surgery on both knees roughly a month before the Lutter fight. Could have had an affect... Forrest was out of his league. Plain and simple. If they fought 10 times, the result would only vary if Silva decided he wanted to win differently. Dan Henderson is better than Forrest Griffin. And, he's tougher.

Yeah, and Travis Lutter was very dehydrated...so we'll call it even. His take down defense isn't that great. And I agree that Hendo is better than Forrest, but I'm not sure I'd say he's tougher. I think he's got a better chin...but Forrest is a tough dude.
