As far as huge geographical area, isn't that what happens at Lex Christian and Lex Catholic. The Chowning girl at LC, from my recollection, lived in Berea. That is about an hour drive, one way.

I would hazard a guess that Christians (I am talking mainly Protestants here) who take their faith seriously are upset with the public schools and wouldn't mind sending their children to a Christian, non-Catholic setting.

I kind of disagree with some of your travel estimates. I'd imagine the economics af travel and tuition would also hamper this. Could it happen, well I guess never say never. Will it? Seriouisly doubt it.

I think it is more than two schools. How good would NCC have been last year if their 3 stud volleyball players had played basketball their entire careers. Campbell Co. usually has several v'ballers that play club ball. Boone would have had a 6'2" center last year if she hadn't played v'ball. I really think this is a big factor in NKY. Other than Louisville no other part of the state has NEAR as many good athletes that forgo b'ball for club v'ball. Look at LexCath, they have great b'ball year in and year out, but their v'ball is very ordinary. That's because the thing to do at that school is plat b'ball and not club v'ball. Other than the hugh academy schools in L'ville, where they have so many good athletes to chose from, no school is a powerhouse statewide in BOTH sports. Very few schools throughout the state loose b'ball players to club volleyball compared to NKY.

 

I do agree that club volleyball does pull talent from girls basketball and there are not too many players that are doing both, especially if they are the talented, taller ones. They could do both and I am not sure if it is the high school or club coaches who encourage that but I know that they make it difficult to do so. Club soccer also does the same thing and we see that as well in Oldahm Co - sad that they have to choose and cannot do both. I think that has hurt the number of quality of high school girls teams and why you have dominate powerhouses year fter year.

You really can not do both. The club tryout and practice season is in the Middle of Basketball season. I have tried to find a team that will start the club ball after March 8th but there is not one available. I can not imagine if we were allowed to have the Basketball girls play AAU ball right in the middle of the V-ball season.

 

I think that V-ball should not be able to start the clubs until after BBALL season. I think you might get more participation in both.

In today’s world the “stud” athlete is told if “if you don’t play your primary sport year round you will seriously diminish your chances of playing in college”. This puts a lot of pressure on the kid to choose because they may really want to play another sport, but they know their competition is working year-round.

 

IMO, the HS coach is also put in a tough position because they want to win and need that stud athlete; however, it’s tough on team chemistry if some player’s are allowed to attend practice “when they can work it in around club schedule”. Again IMO, if it’s the HS season then practices, games, and functions “MUST” take priority over club sports unless it’s a “win at all cost coach”.

 

With four 6A schools within 15 minutes of each other, and no open enrollment, sports are "seriously" diluted. If the County of Boone had open enrollment you can bet there would be a powerhouse or two in multiple sports every year.

A big obstacle at Calvary to their growth is how conservative and restrictive (dare I say legalistic) they are. Certainly to many people that either don't share the same faith as the leadership of the school and to others that may share the same faith, but not the conservative brand of the schools leadership, this is a huge hurdle to their growth, IMO.

 

I am not familiar with Lexington Christian so I can't comment on how conservative they are, but locally a school that mirrors the growth of what LBBC is envisioning could happen at Calvary is Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy. They are much more culturally mainstream, which would make them more palatable to a wider portion of the population.

Club Soccer is a joke....in fact most Soccer people are too. They will tell kids at 11 and 12 years old that they HAVE to play soccer year round if they want any shot at being a big college player. I have seen middle school kids in tears because soccer coaches told them that and made them choose between soccer and basketball. They generally have no respect for school sports (mainly b/c school soccer is joke) and expect their kids to skip school sports activities for their club teams.
