What if a player excels in his/her sport but is not what one would consider a good citizen or is not looked upon as a positive role model. Should that prohibit his/her jersey from being displayed or number being retired?

 

Yes, it should not be retired.

I think if numbers are to be retired, it depends on the school. A school with a long history of winning certainly would be tougher than a school that has never won a title and isn't going to realistically win one in the foreseeable future. Numbers should only be "officially" retired after a waiting period of 5-10 years, so that the hoopla and excitement over current achievements can be viewed from an unbiased distance. Maybe a coach just doesn't give out a certain number during the 5-10 year time frame, but I still think there needs to be a waiting period except in rare occassions that have nothing to do with sports.

 

The idea of retiring Jersey's as stated in another post is a great idea. It is an opportunity to celebrate your teams past while encouraging the future generations.

IMO it should be up to the discretion of the school for each sport and athlete. However, the criteria should be extremely high and encompass the whole person and not solely what they did on the field or court.

BGHS has retired two numbers in football and one (that I know of) in baseball. All three players played professionally.

 

In football:

33-Dale Lindsey (started nine seasons at MLB for the Cleveland Browns).

31-Robert Reynolds (played for the Tennessee Titans at LB).

 

In baseball:

7-Paul Kilgus (played for the Chicago Cubs, the St Louis Cardinals, and the Toronto Blue Jays as a P).

My own opinion I do not think a pee wee or high school number should ever be retired. JD

As far as I know Somerset has only one retired jersey. This jersey belonged to Johnathon Perdue who was killed in a car accident somewhere around 1990 or 1991.
